Somerville hangs tough with bigger schools: BELLVILLE -- The Somerville cross country team finished fourth, just four points shy of the bronze, on Saturday at the Bellville Invitational.

Bellville won while Brazos was second and Hempstead third.

Somerville's Lydia Orozco placed 29th out of 68 runners with a time of 17 minutes, 20 seconds in the 2-mile run for varsity girls, while Somerville's Josh Malonado finished 11th in the varsity boys' 3-mile run with a time of 19:50.

In the junior high division, Marion Supak earned a fourth-place medal for her 11:37 in the 1.5-mile run.

Somerville will compete at the Lexington Small School Showdown on Sept. 11 in Lexington.

GOLF

Yawn in control at Brazos Valley Amateur: Former A&M Consolidated standout Brian Yawn shot a first-round 1-over 73 to take a four-stroke lead at the Brazos Valley Amateur Championship on Saturday at Traditions Club.

Jeff Hart, Jeff Schmahl and Charles Rugh are tied for second at 77 with Sam Destefano and Bret Hood two strokes back after 79s.

Kayla Key leads the women's division after a 78, while Paul Batista, Don Johnson, Gary McClendon and Bill Wiley are tied for the lead in the men's senior division at 80.

The final round is set for Sunday.

VOLLEYBALL

Consol splits two matches at Pearland: The A&M Consolidated volleyball team won its first consolation match and then dropped its second at the Pearland Volleyball Classic on Saturday.

The Lady Tigers began the day with a 25-21, 25-21 victory over Amarillo.

In the gold bracket consolation semifinal round, Consol dropped a 17-25, 29-27, 25-13 decision to Garland Sachse, the program that lost to Consolidated in the third round of last year's playoffs. Sachse went on to lose the consolation bracket final to Brenham 11-25, 25-13, 26-24.

Consol (18-8) will play host to Klein Collins at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
