The Bryan Vikings battled injuries and illness to place third Saturday at A&M Consolidated's Tiger Invitational Wrestling Tournament.

Katy Morton Ranch won the team title, and San Antonio Reagan was second.

"Tracey Hodges wrestled his first match and just couldn't hack it," Bryan coach Mike Zito said of his 152-pound wrestler, who left the tournament because of illness. "Zack Hiney, my 189-pounder, injured his knee and is not here. Kevin White, my 130-pounder, has an injured elbow."

The absences probably cost the Vikings a shot at second place. Bryan fell behind Reagan after the semifinal round but built a comfortable team lead over Leander Vista Ridge.

The Vikings sent four wrestlers to the finals, with Javier Aguilar dominating his match against Morton Ranch finalist Cyrus Brown in the 123-pound weight class. Aguilar jumped to an early lead and never showed a hint of losing control, eyeing the clock as he wrapped up the title.

Trevor Sanderson, back from a bout with a staph infection, reached the finals at 180 pounds, falling to Reagan's Joshua Williams.

"Trevor is probably my biggest one, but he's been out for about a month and a half," Zito said. "Today was his first real tournament back, and he ended up taking second place."

Two other Vikings earned silver meals. Layne Frederick of Victoria Memorial beat Bryan's Omar Aguillar at 171 pounds. Patrick Cardillo of Morton Ranch defeated Bryan's Victor Thomas in the 119-pound final.

"Morton Ranch won last year ,and they are better this year," A&M Consolidated coach Brian Wessell said. "That pretty much puts it in perspective. They just had a kid wrestling in a championship match on every mat."

Jacob Hernandez was the only Consol wrestler to reach the finals. Austin Burk of Conroe Oak Ridge won the 140-pound gold medal by pinning Hernandez in the first round.

"Jacob did have a good takedown," Wessell said. "Evidently, the kid that he lost to just moved in from Nebraska, and he was a state placer in Nebraska. The kid looked real smooth, but Jacob didn't back down, scored some points and I was proud of him."

Bryan's Alex Aguilar, whose only loss on the day was to Burk, placed third at 140 pounds thanks to a final-match forfeit. His opponent had already wrestled the maximum number of matches.

Orozco Forster and Fred Blackshire also had bronze medal finishes. Landon Meekma was fourth for the Vikings.

The Tigers also got third-place finishes form Conor Roussel (4-1) at 130 pounds and Levi Leatham (3-1) at 189.
