Normangee volleyball team heading to state

TYLER -- The Normangee volleyball team outlasted Iola 13-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-16, 15-13 in the Class A Region III finals at the Herrington Patriot Center on Saturday.

Hillary Hodges, who led Normangee (31-10) with 19 kills, blocked an Iola attack on the final point to clinch the Lady Panthers' trip to state.

"The kids have worked hard," Normangee head coach Tammy Dean said. "Iola's a great team, and we've had a mental block against them. But our kids proved they can do it when they set their mind to it."

Bailey Biddle had 13 kills and two blocks for Normangee, while Jill Riley had eight kills and two blocks, and Rebecca Isbell had six kills. Samantha Corgey had 37 assists and served out the Game 5 victory. Leah Munsey had 12 digs and one assist, and Charla Lopez had two kills and one assist.

Normangee will face Bronte in the state semifinals Friday in San Marcos.

Brenham heading to state: CYPRESS -- Brenham started slow but beat District 18-4A rival Montgomery 20-25, 25-10, 25-23, 25-14 on Saturday in the Class 4A Region III championship at the Berry Center.

Brenham will join Canyon Randall, Richardson Pearce and Seguin in the 4A state tournament in San Marcos next week.

Centerville falls in 2A Region III championship: TYLER -- Centerville's LeAnne Jones had 11 kills, and Christy Wellman had eight kills and 10 blocks, but the Lady Tigers couldn't hold off White Oak, which won the Class 2A Region III title 25-20, 25-14, 25-21 on Saturday.

Kelsey Lagrone led Centerville (41-3) in digs with 17. Jill Griffin had four kills and 16 digs, while Sarah Mutschler had five kills, 16 assists and eight digs. Rainey Griffin added four kills and 14 digs.

White Oak (44-0) will play in the 2A state semifinals on Thursday in San Marcos.
