New Consol volleyball coach set to meet team

Cydryce McMillian, the new head volleyball coach at A&M Consolidated, will meet with returning and incoming volleyball players Friday.

McMillian set the introductory session with Consol volleyball players and their parents, family and friends at Tiger Gym from 6-7 p.m.

"It's a way for the players to get to know me before we just walk on the court," McMillian said.

McMillian takes over for former coach Adam Cornell, who resigned at the end of the school year to coach volleyball at Richardson High School.

Cornell led the Lady Tigers to the regional quarterfinals and a second straight District 13-5A championship last season. It also was Consol's third straight season to reach the playoffs under Cornell.

The transition from Cornell to McMillian turned out to be an easy one for Consol.

"I had already signed on to teach, and the volleyball position came open when Adam left," McMillian said. "I interviewed, got the job and signed my contract Friday."

The former Cydryce Carter was a four-year starter at Indiana University and helped lead the Hoosiers to the NCAA Tournament twice. An Academic All-American in 1998 and '99, the middle blocker is the IU career blocks leader.

"I held several records, but I haven't checked lately," McMillian said. "They are playing with different rules now, so records are a thing of the past. I coached collegiately for five years, so if the girls are looking to play at the next level, I have connections and advice."

McMillian served as an assistant for three years at Indiana and was an assistant coach at Texas State University for two years. McMillian was the head coach at Crowley the last three years.

McMillian is married to Charles McMillian, the Bryan High graduate who joined Mike Sherman's Texas A&M football staff as a defensive back coach. He has been on the A&M staff since January.

"I have heard a lot of good things about [Consol], how much parental support there is, and the coaches say there are a lot of good athletes in the program," Cydryce McMillian said. "The kids are playing a lot of club [volleyball], and it's probably at a higher level than here at Crowley. I'm excited to get in the gym and go. They went to the third round last year, and I'm told they have a hunger to go further."
