HUNTSVILLE -- A&M Consolidated probably needed something special to beat the top-ranked volleyball team in the state Friday night, but the only thing out of the ordinary for the Lady Tigers was how poorly they played.

Consol's charge through the state playoffs came to an abrupt halt in the Class 5A Region II semifinals, where Round Rock Westwood cruised to a 25-18, 25-12, 25-20 victory at the Johnson Coliseum.

The fifth-ranked Lady Tigers finished the season at 34-9. Consol was eliminated in the regional semifinal round for the second consecutive year.

Consol couldn't come up with anything close to the level of play that produced playoff sweeps over John Tyler, Richardson and Garland Sachse.

"It wasn't that they beat us up," said senior Karla Gilbert, who led Consol with 13 kills. "We beat ourselves up. That's what really hurts the most. We know we can play better than that. I don't know the reason, but we weren't doing the stuff we're used to doing."

Westwood, which moved up one spot to the top of the Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings this week, improved to 40-5 and reached the regional final for the first time since 2003. The Lady Warriors will play District 16-5A rival Georgetown on Saturday afternoon for a berth in the state tournament.

The Lady Tigers were hoping a veteran team could earn the school's first trip to the state tournament since 1985, but mistakes prevented Consol from pushing the Westwood team that needed five games to beat College Park in the regional quarterfinals Tuesday.

Consol lost 30 points on errors in the match, compared to 14 for Westwood, which had five in the first two games. The Lady Tigers were whistled for two net violations and three ball-handling errors early in Game 1, allowing Westwood to jump to an 11-4 lead that seemed to stun Consol.

In their third-round win over Sachse, the Lady Tigers committed a total of 17 errors, making only seven of the ball-handling mistakes that plagued them against Westwood.

"We didn't play our game," Consol coach Cydryce McMillian said. "The things that we've been accustomed to doing well, we didn't do well tonight. I don't know if we were shell-shocked. We were just making a lot of errors. There were net violations and ball-handling errors, things like that didn't have anything to do with Westwood."

Bad serve receiving kept the Lady Tigers on their heels throughout the match. Setters Bailey Gillum and Casey Shomaker spent most of the match chasing down wayward passes, and that had a devastating effect on the offense.

Gilbert got help from outside hitter Ashton Holliday (seven kills) and middle blocker Julia Westerbur (five), but the inability to run the offense smoothly resulted in just four kills for junior middle blocker Erika Arthur. Senior outside hitter Shelby Dickson, one of Consol's leading attackers throughout the season, did not register a kill.

"They did a very good job of serving deep and hard, and we didn't do a very good job of handling those balls," McMillian said. "Our passing broke down, which didn't allow us to run the middle [attack]. That's the No. 1 part of our offense, establishing the middle, and we weren't able to do that. We had a lot of balls going to the outside."

The tone for the match was established early. Westwood scored seven consecutive points for the 11-4 lead and later added a 5-0 run. Gilbert and Westerbur had two kills apiece as the Lady Tigers crept within 20-15, but Westwood pulled away.

"We knew the first 10 points would set the tone, so we had to come out really aggressive and establish the rhythm for the match," Westwood coach Kate Zora said. "We put a lot of importance on the start of every match."

Westwood seized command of Game 2 with an 8-2 charge early. Four kills on quick sets up the middle by Westerbur, Gilbert and Arthur got Consol within 16-11, but the Lady Warriors closed with a dominant 9-1 stretch.

Game 3 was more of a battle. Gilbert smacked five kills and Holliday provided a lift with three as the Lady Tigers built a 16-14 advantage. However, Westwood took seven of the next eight points and advanced steadily to end the match in 1 hour, 6 minutes.

Gillum had 16 assists for Consol. Kelsey Kinley and Dickson led the Lady Tigers with nine digs each.

Senior middle blocker Amari Deardorff collected 10 kills and sophomore outside hitter Sierra Patrick added nine as the Lady Warriors out-hit Consol 40-32.

Georgetown (40-7) swept defending regional champion Lake Highlands in the second semifinal.
