SOCCER

Fellow forward Jackson McKellar had two goals for the Rams. James Bien and David Moon had one assist each.

Allen's Caleb Clanton had two saves in goal to post the shutout. Johnny Gustafson made 14 saves for Brazos Christian (1-1).

Other standouts for the Eagles were midfielder Brian Brown and defender Mark Norman.

Allen Academy will host New Braunfels Christian at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

VOLLEYBALL

Blinn's Schmidt voted best in JCs: Blinn setter Kayla Schmidt was named the 2008 Two-Year Colleges' National Player of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Schmidt led the 33-2 Lady Bucs to their first national championship.

"It's not my doing," Schmidt said. "All the passers, all the hitters, I couldn't have done it without them and I thank them for their hard work."

Blinn head coach David Rehr said Schmidt was the "heartbeat of the team" and led the team with her ballhandling and leadership.

Schmidt had 19 digs in the championship match against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. For the season, she averaged 11.69 assists, 1.51 digs and 1.21 kills per set with a .375 hitting percentage.

The 5-foot-10 sophomore who starred at Bellville High School will receive the award at the AVCA banquet on Dec. 19 in Omaha, Neb. Schmidt hasn't signed with a four-year school but plans to visit NCAA Division I universities during the holiday break.
