FAIRFIELD -- A&M Consolidated earned a return trip to Fairfield with an easy victory over Richardson on Saturday night, but the Lady Tigers may have a hard time getting back to the regional tournament unless they play better.

The seventh-ranked Lady Tigers lurched past Richardson 25-16, 25-21, 25-19 in the second round of the state playoffs at the Johnson Activity Center. Consol improved to 33-8 and gained a spot in the Class 5A Region II quarterfinals.

Consol will play Garland Sachse (31-11) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Fairfield. Sachse, the District 10-5A champion, swept its area-round match against Belton, which finished third in Consol-dominated 12-5A.

Richardson lost to Consol in the area round for the second consecutive year, finishing at 17-13.

The Lady Tigers need one more victory to reach the regional semifinals for the second consecutive season. Consol has swept both its playoff matches, but the Lady Tigers did not play at their usual level against Richardson.

Consol committed 29 errors, only slightly fewer than the 33 miscues by the Lady Eagles.

"We're still trying to work on being consistent," Consol coach Cydryce McMillian said. "As we get further in the playoffs, the team that makes the fewest errors and plays at the highest level will win. We've got to cut down on our errors, especially in key moments. It's OK if we're making aggressive errors. It's the unforced errors that we've got to limit."

Consol's lowest-error, highest-kill game was the opener. Middle blocker Erika Arthur slammed six kills, outside hitter Ashton Holliday added five and middle blocker Julia Westerbur contributed two blocks as the taller Lady Tigers overpowered Richardson.

Game 2 was littered with mistakes. Richardson gave away 15 points on errors, and the Lady Tigers lost 10 points on mistakes. The Lady Eagles led most of the game and were tied at 21, but Consol scored the last four points on three errors and a Westerbur block.

Richardson coach Adam Cornell, who coached at Consol two years ago, said it wasn't a case of his team trying to do too much.

"We did all we could," Cornell said. "It's a little bit of solace knowing that we did our best. We lost to a great team. [The Lady Tigers] did what they're supposed to do."

Although McMillian bemoaned her team's errors, she was pleased that the Lady Tigers cleaned up their play late in the second game.

"We kind of opened the door for them, but I knew we had the ability to come back and play at a higher level," McMillian said. "I knew when we were able to do that we could close the gap and finish the game out."

Consol dropped the first four points of the third game on mistakes, then steadily regained control of the match. Arthur delivered five of her match-high 12 kills in the final game, punishing the Lady Eagles on slide plays to the outside and quick sets up the middle.

The Lady Tigers got nine kills from 6-foot-5 senior Karla Gilbert, who added two blocks. Junior setter Bailey Gillum dished out 26 assists.

"Our passing was on, and that let us run the offense," Arthur said. "Coach Mac always says quick middles are unstoppable."

Senior Brittany Jackson led Richardson with eight kills.
