Lexi Erwin had 10 kills to lead a hard-hitting attack for The Woodlands College Park in a 25-19, 25-22, 25-22 volleyball victory over Bryan on Tuesday at Viking Gym.
Bryan, which trailed throughout the opening game, took early leads in the final two before College Park (14-6) regained momentum to close them out.
"We get a lead but have a little breakdown in our passing sometimes," Bryan head coach Caroline Simpson said. "We gave up the lead a couple of times in the match, and that's kind of frustrating. But we're doing some good things out there."
Erwin, the 6-foot-1 senior who has committed to play at Michigan, wasn't completely unstoppable, but she was an important force. The Lady Vikings dug three of her hard hits early in the third game, but she came back to record six of her kills in the Cavaliers' clinching game.
Bryan (5-11) countered with senior Tiffany Regmund, who had 12 kills, hitting big from the back line. Freshman Reagan Boenker had eight kills, nine digs and two aces. Boenker is one of three Bryan freshmen who have seen considerable action so far this season.
"I keep saying that we have young kids and right now our goal is to get better and that's what we're doing," Simpson said. "They're fighting. They're competing, and we're doing some things each time a little bit better, so I can't totally complain. I'd like different results, though."
College Park sophomore middle blocker Katie Mitchell had five kills in the opening game and Taylor Erwin contributed easy power to help last year's District 14-5A co-champions earn the net advantage.
Bryan took an early 4-1 lead in the second game, but College Park took its first lead at 12-11 on an ace from Jaimie Witcraft. The ace was one of three serves that the Lady Vikings were unable to return as the Lady Cavaliers took a 15-11 advantage.
Bryan trailed by as much as four points on three more occasions in the second game but pulled close at 22-21. College Park's Taylor Erwin then hit a shot that rolled down the net and fell over for a winner and a 23-21 lead. Mitchell hit a short set spike and Erwin closed it out by squeezing an attack through Bryan's block.
The Lady Vikings' defense was at its sharpest to open the third game. Bryan built a 7-3 lead on the serve of junior Emily Cowley, who had two aces in the match.
"The kids are not lacking in their effort, but we're playing against teams with more experience," Simpson said. "We'll get better. We play a tough preseason, so we can get ready for district. Even from the beginning, these kids don't play like freshmen. They are young and inexperienced, but they have no fear."
College Park ran off seven straight points in the third game, moving from a 12-9 deficit to a 16-12 lead. The longest run of the match started when Lauren Chapman's hit and concluded with an ace by Chapman. Again Bryan made it close, narrowing the score to 23-22 before Mitchell planted the game-winner.
Bryan setter Kaylee Piatt had 23 assists, working hard to get in position for many of them.
Bryan will play in the San Marcos Tournament this weekend and plays a nondistrict match at Huntsville next week before opening 12-5A play.
The Lady Vikings won the JV match 29-27, 18-25, 25-16.
