Regional track meets begin Monday in an unusual Monday-Tuesday schedule this season. Brazos Valley track participants will compete in eight regional meets held at seven different sites.

The top two finishers in each event at regionals will advance to the UIL state meet in Austin on May 14-15.

Some of the top athletes in the area are multi-event competitors.

Brenham's Derek Edwards will compete in the high jump and triple jump, and the Cubs have entries in all three relays, which could keep them in contention for the Class 4A Region III title at Sam Houston State's Bowers Stadium.

Rudder's Lamaria Cole qualified in the high jump, triple jump and long jump. Cole has an early scheduling challenge when the high jump and triple jump are both set for 8:30 a.m. Monday at Humble's Turner Stadium in the 3A Region III meet.

Caldwell's Vantazia Jackson is qualified in four individual events at that meet, which also features the state leader in the discus, Navasota junior Rodney Brown. Madisonville's Brock Taylor will try to return to the state meet after an injury-plagued junior year. Taylor was the state silver medalist in the 100 meters in 2008.

At Converse Judson's D.W. Rutledge Stadium, Lexington's Clint Hutson leads the Eagles in the 2A Region IV meet. His individual events are the long jump, 300 hurdles and 110 hurdles, which he won at state last year.

Franklin's Janie Neyland is in five events at the 2A Region III meet in Whitehouse.

Bremond's Johnathan White is a defending state champ in the 800 and will be running at the Class A Region IV meet at Sam Houston State in Huntsville. He also runs the 400, which he finished second in at area to Burton's Xavier Bethany. Bethany also will compete in the 200, high jump and triple jump.

In Class 2A-5A, the top three competitors from each district advance to the regional meets. Class A has an extra qualifying round with an area meet between district and regionals. The top four advance from the area meet to regionals.

A&M Consolidated will send six girls to the 5A Region II meet at Baylor's Hart-Patterson Track in Waco. Sally Hays and Karis Jochen will run in the 3,200 on Friday and the 1,600 on Saturday. Consol's Karla Gilbert and Victoria Quintana are in the shot put. Consol high jumper Jesse Drummond and pole vaulter Catherine Chenault also are set to compete.

Consol's only male competitor is long jumper Andrew Fletcher. Mikey Piatt of Bryan, who is attempting to bounce back from a wrist and hand injury, is in the pole vault.

The UIL will add a ninth competitor to the state meet this year, with the best third-place mark or time from all of the regions qualifying for state.

Cameron high jumper Kelsey Krenek, who was scheduled to compete, withdrew because of a softball injury suffered Friday.
