A&M Consolidated's teams will be trying to return to the familiar destination of the state meet, while Rudder's girls will break new ground during regional cross country action Saturday.

The Consol teams will run in the Class 5A Region II meet at Vandergriff Park in Arlington. Rudder's girls earned the school's first team berth in a UIL postseason competition by finishing third at the District 24-3A race. The Lady Rangers, along with 2008 state qualifier Cameron, will compete in the Class 3A Region III meet in Humble.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals from each region will advance to the state meet scheduled for Nov. 14 in Round Rock.

Consol's girls finished fifth at regionals last year. The Lady Tigers reached the state meet in 2006 (finishing seventh) and 2007 (eighth).

The Region II girls meet features two dominant teams in College Park and defending state champion The Woodlands. Consol coach Rodney Wellmann said those teams are considered locks for the top two spots, with Consol's District 12-5A champion girls expected to compete with Vista Ridge, Cy-Fair, Georgetown and 12-5A runner-up Belton for the other state berth.

Consol freshman Karis Jochen, who finished second at the district meet, could contend for a top 10 finish, according to Wellmann. Jochen leads a lineup that includes Chaiss Matthews, Sally Hays, Amy Bingaman, Kristen Bettiol, Jordan Bettiol and Katy Williams.

For Rudder's girls, Shelby Christen led the way at the 24-3A meet by finishing fifth individually. The Lady Rangers lineup includes Haley Paker, Brittany Rogers, Sarah Coe and Belen Olivo.

Tim Deahl will represent the Rudder boys after finishing eighth at district.

The Consol boys took second at the 12-5A meet behind Killeen Ellison. The Tigers boys also face a powerful region that includes defending state champion The Woodlands.

Stephen Case is the top runner for the Tigers. The other members of the regional entry are Travis Bohne, David Mora, Patrick Alexshonis, Josh Herrington, Leonel Drukker and Brent Winemiller.
