CLASS 2A REGION IV

CONVERSE -- Lexington's Clint Hutson wasted no time earning a return trip to the UIL State Track Meet, but in a different event than the one he won gold in in 2009.

Hutson jumped 22 feet, 3 3/4 inches in the long jump to claim the silver medal in an opening event at Converse Judson's D.W. Rutledge Stadium. Hitchcock's Darius Dotson won with a leap of 22-6 3/4, but Hutson edged out Jar'rcus Reggins for third place and the automatic qualifying spot at state.

At the same time, Courtney Jackson clinched the gold medal for Lexington in the girls shot put at 126-6 inches, three inches farther than the throw of La'Tricia Griffin from Van Vleck.

Hutson also ran a leg of Lexington's 400-meter relay team, which had the third-fastest qualifying time at 43.28 seconds. Tevin Lovings, Dylan Iselt and Gabriel Wright joined Hutson on that team.

Lexington also reached Tuesday's finals in the 800 relay.

Hutson (14.97) edged past Reggins (15.02) for the best qualifying time in the 110-meter hurdles, where Hutson is the defending state champion.

CLASS 4A REGION III

HUNTSVILLE -- Brenham's Will Antkowiak ran to the regional championship in the 3,200 meters, clocking a time of 9:17.44 at Bowers Stadium on Monday.

Derek Edwards earned a return trip to the state meet for the Cubs with his triple jump of 46-7 3/4. Edwards also qualified in the high jump with his best of 6-8.

Terrence Brown claimed the shot put bronze medal, throwing 54-2. With 34 points, Brenham holds the boys team lead over Buda Hays (16 points) with running finals set for Tuesday.

Brenham's Leah Ward was fifth in the high jump at 5-0.

CLASS A REGION IV

HUNTSVILLE -- Somerville's Jeff Foster went 21-5 1/2 in the long jump, earning a spot at the state meet on the opening day of regional competition.

The top two finishers automatically qualify and Foster was second behind defending champion Mantrez Landrum of Chilton, who jumped 24-1 3/4.

Milano's Thomas Sanders took the bronze medal in the triple jump, clearing 43-0 1/2 to edge out Xavier Bethany of Burton, who jumped 42-11 1/2. Landrum had another spectacular jump to win, 50-1 3/4.

State champion Laurie Byrd of Round Top-Carmine defended her regional 3,200-meter title with a time of 11:27.12.

Milano's Ryan Karl was fifth in the boys 3,200, running 10:39.37.
