WACO -- Eight local athletes won nine state titles, and Brazos Christian's 800-meter relay team set a state record at the TAPPS State Championships on Friday and Saturday at Baylor University.
In Class A, Brazos Christian's Nellie Hilner won two state championships, taking the girls 3,200 in 13 minutes, 35.89 seconds and the 1,600 in 6:13.40.
Brazos Christian's 400 and 800 boys relay teams also won state titles, finishing in 46.38 and 1:35.49 respectively. The 800 relay time set the state record, breaking Denton Calvary Academy's mark from 2004.
Chad Milborn won the boys 100 in 11.64 while Lauren Paine won the 400 in 65.58.
Also medaling for Brazos Christian were Colin Tseng taking third in the 300 hurdles (44.90), Elizabeth Pierce finishing third in the girls 100 (19.83) and Kyle Garrett placing third in the pole vault with a height of 9 feet, 6 inches.
Brazos Christian's boys also took third in the 4x440-yard relay in 3:50.82.
Other finishers for Brazos Christian were Lauren Paine (fourth, triple jump; fifth, 100), John Gustafson (fourth, 110 hurdles), the girls 4x440 relay team (fourth), Sheldon Sutphen (fifth, discus) and Jay Grady Capps (seventh, long jump).
In 2A, Allen Academy's Caleb Clanton won the 1,600 in 4:53.14. Clanton also took second in the 3,200 in 11:00.09, while Oksana Hays took third in the 800 in 2:35.44.
Other finishers for Allen Academy were Nicole Lopez (fourth, 300 hurdles), Matt Schieffer (fifth, 110 hurdles), Sarah Brien (fifth, 3,200) and Hays (eighth, 400).
In 3A, St. Joseph's Alex Castilleja took third in the long jump with a distance of 20-0.75. Teammate Ambri Brand took second in the 400 in 63.80, and Chad Peevey finished third in the triple jump at 39-5. Zadous Pollard also took third in the girls 200 in 27.36.
Other finishers for St. Joseph were the girls 400 relay team (fourth), Devondrick Brown (sixth, 100), Maria Morrell (seventh, 1,600) and Chad Peevey (eighth, 200).
In the team standings, the Brazos Christian girls team and boys team each finished third. Allen Academy's girls finished 12th and its boys finished in 10th. St. Joseph girls team finished 11th and the boys finished in 12th.
