Harris, Moore find success at 5A Region II meet

WACO -- Whitney Harris and Pashe Moore did more with less.

Harris, who qualified for the Class 5A Region II track meet in four events, only ran the 400 in qualifying Friday, but she ran it quickly and easily. The A&M Consolidated senior, who signed a track scholarship with the University of Houston this week, breezed to a 56.99-second time Friday, the best among qualifiers.

Spring Westfield's Quineterra Charles, who has run a 55.28, set up a showdown by winning her heat in 57.24.

Moore, Bryan's senior hurdler, did not run the 300-meter hurdles, but put herself in position to challenge for a trip to the state meet in the 100-meter hurdles. She had second-best qualifying time, clocking 14.90 and winning the third heat. Moore also ran a leg on Bryan's 4x100-meter relay team that qualified eighth. Moore, Marissa Perry, Ashley Maxwell and Shelby McGee ran 48.23, well off the 46.35 pace set by Dallas Skyline.

The regional track meet was slowed by hail, lightning and heavy rain Friday during qualifying races, but the Vikings got a good start after the initial delay of 1 hour and 45 minutes at the opening of the evening session. C. J. Demouchette, Andre Carter, P.J. Fisher and Monterrell Washington ran a seventh-best 41.85, sending that quartet to Saturday's final in the 400 relay.

Bryan didn't find the parade route to the finals in the 4x200 relay after it rained, however. After a second rain delay of 56 minutes, the Vikings' quartet of Carter, Demouchette, Washington, and Odom finished 10th in qualifying, behind a pair of district opponents, including eighth-place Temple (1:28.42).

Vikings' coach Justin Smith was pleased with the performance of the sprint relay.

"Any time you make it to the finals of the regional meet, that's definitely a plus," Smith said. "You get the chance to compete another day."

The initial rain delay came before the scheduled 4:30 p.m. start, and another brief thunderstorm dropped more rain on the Hart-Patterson track at 7:54, prompting the action to stop just before the boys' 4x200 relay.

Keri Wood will run both the 800 and 1,600 for A&M Consolidated, after qualifying second in the shorter race. Wood finished in 2:16.44, third-best, but was an automatic qualifier as a heat winner. The time trailed Aliese Hyde of Harker Heights, who ran 2:16.24. District 13-5A runners had the top three times in the 800, with Belton's Skylor Alford running 2:16.27

Bryan's Jaron Gentry had his best triple jump attempt on his second try, but at 45-1 3/4, he missed a spot in the finals by one spot and 4 inches. Gentry will long jump Saturday.

A&M Consolidated's Taylor Reynolds had fouls on his first two attempts in the shot put, stepping out on the second after a short throw. Reynolds' only legal throw was for 45-6 3/4, well short of the 50-6 1/2 he had thrown at the District 13-5A meet.
