The 1,600-meter run was sandwiched in the middle of Keri Wood's exhausting afternoon, but the A&M Consolidated senior tried to convince herself it was an appetizer.

Wood unleashed a strong finishing kick to earn the gold medal in the metric mile at the District 12-5A track and field championships Thursday at Tigerland Stadium. Wood also qualified for regionals in the 800 and ran a good anchor leg on the closing 1,600 relay, but it wasn't quite enough to bring the team title back to the Lady Tigers.

Killeen Ellison slipped past Consol on the final event to capture its first district team championship since winning at the Class 4A level in 2005. The Lady Eagles scored 126 points after taking second in the 1,600 relay, while Consol notched 120 after getting fourth in the last race.

Consol came close to reclaiming its position as district champion after having a streak of seven consecutive league titles stopped last year by Harker Heights.

Ellison cut into Consol's big Day 1 lead with a strong effort in the long jump and took its first lead by winning the 400 relay to start the running finals. The teams battled for the lead the rest of the afternoon, with the Lady Eagles pushing their advantage to 18 points before Wood, Morgan Hartmann and Chase Mathews delivered a 1-3-4 finish in the 1,600 that gave Consol a 112-110 edge going into the last race.

The Lady Eagles ran in the top two throughout the 1,600 relay and finished second behind Harker Heights in 3:54.91. Consol's Jordan Privett, Mindy Davis, Kara Mason and Wood were fourth with a time of 4:04.12.

"They had a great day," Wood said. "We had to beat them in the 4x400 to win, and they were light years ahead of us. We ran the best we could, and that's really all you can ask for."

Consol girls track coach Rodney Wellmann sounded happy to give Ellison a chase to the end.

"Looking at how many girls [Ellison] got into the finals, I didn't think it would be that close," Wellmann said. "I thought they'd run away with it. But give our girls credit. The girls we had in the finals did real well."

The top three finishers in each event earned a spot in the 5A Region II meet in Waco on May 1-2. Consol qualified seven entries on Thursday, giving the Lady Tigers 12 bids to the regional meet.

Wood, who finished second in the 800, qualified for regionals in two events for the second consecutive year. Morgan Hartmann also earned two regional berths, finishing third in the 1,600 on Thursday after winning the 3,200 on Wednesday.

Consol's powerful group of distance runners includes regional qualifiers Chase Mathews and Katy Williams.

"We got second in cross country at district [last fall] with our distance girls," Wellmann said. "All this spring we talked about how we were going to kind of change things. That was great, to see the girls shine that are up at the school at 6:30 a.m.

"We would have loved to have won, but that is definitely something we can build on and feel good about."

Wood, the defending champion in the 800, recovered from being boxed in halfway through the race to take the lead, but Heights' Aliese Hyde won a sprint to finish in 2:13.62. Wood easily took second at 2:16.32.

That left Wood with about 3 hours to prepare for another title defense, in the 1,600. Belton's Regan Tindell led through the first three laps, but Wood pulled ahead on the back stretch and surged to a winning time of 5:13.35. Tindell was second in 5:16.19, while Hartmann edged freshman teammate Mathews by 0.03 seconds for the third regional spot, finishing in 5:27.67.

"I knew [Tindell] would take it out fast," Wood said. "I told myself that if I could stick with her, I could pass her at the end. She started to pick it up at 300 meters to go, so I passed her as soon as I could. I didn't look back.

"It feels great when you execute your plan. It was a little bit redemptive for me as well, because I really wanted to win the 800."

Wood returned to the track 40 minutes later to run the anchor leg on the 1,600 relay.

"At practice we do a mile warm-up and a mile cool-down," Wood said. "I told myself that the 1,600 was my mile warm-up."

Consol's other regional qualifiers from Thursday included Catherine Chenault in the pole vault, Karla Gilbert in the shot put and Ashley Adeyemi in the 100 hurdles. Chenault and Gilbert produced personal bests, with Chenault clearing 10 feet, 6 inches for second place while Gilbert threw 38-1 to take third. Adeyemi was second with a time of 16.04.

Two Lady Tigers narrowly missed qualifying for regionals, with Marikia Houston finishing fourth in the 300 hurdles and Unique King fourth in the 100.

Bryan also suffered a close call in the 400 relay, which figured to be the Lady Vikings' best chance to advance to regionals. Bryan's unit of Ashley Maxwell, Marissa Perry, Trenise Barnes and Shelby McGee ran a time of 49.50 and finished fourth. The Lady Vikes were slightly off their season-best time of 49.34 and were narrowly edged by Belton, which ran 49.47 to claim the third regional spot.

The Lady Vikings also took sixth place in the 1,600 relay and finished eighth with 10 points.

Ellison won the JV competition with 176 points. Consol was second at 169.5, with Bryan scoring nine points to finish eighth.

The freshmen girls team title went to Ellison with 140 points. Bryan claimed second at 100 and Consol was sixth with 33.
