WACO -- Keri Wood's gamble didn't result in a victory Saturday at the Class 5A Region II track meet, but it did help produce the best 1,600 meters of her career and a trip to state.

Wood, the A&M Consolidated senior who bypassed competing in the 800, ran shoulder-to-shoulder with The Woodlands' Sarah Allison in the 1,600 until Allison edged in front coming off the final turn at Baylor's Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex. She won in a time of 4 minutes, 55.40 seconds, but Wood ran a career-best 4:57.20 to earn a return trip to the UIL State Meet.

"I knew I was putting all my eggs in one basket, but last year I tried to double and it was a really difficult effort for me," Wood said. "So, I thought it would be a smart move to focus on the mile."

Wood said she made the decision early.

"After district," she said. "I was a little disappointed in my 800 there and I thought that was conclusive."

Wood was at or near the lead for the early portion of the race and used her patented backstretch surge to challenge Allison.

"I have been working all through the year, just for this one race," said Wood, who surged at 300-meter mark to get even with Allison.

"For a minute," Wood said. "She's pretty fast."

So is Wood, who ran her first sub-5 minute 1,600.

"I'm so happy," she said. "It made all of the work worthwhile. The mornings, hours, miles. That just made it count."

The Tiger boys' 4x200 relay, a surprise finalist, made a strong run at getting out and was in the thick of a tight race most of the way. They finished fourth in a time of 1:28.62, motivating themselves by pinpointing the school record of 1:28.00 as their target.

Josh Burnett made sure the Tigers would remain in contention with a strong first 200 meters out of the starting blocks.

"Burnett made up the stagger on the next guy and nobody looked like they closed any ground on him," A&M Consolidated coach Mike Skinner said. "At that point, I knew we were in a good position."

"We were thinking maybe we could get even farther," said Andrew Fletcher, who ran the second leg. "We thought we had it. [Friday's qualifying race] set us up. We thought we might break the school record, but had a bad handoff."

Skinner was happy with the result.

"After the three-week layoff from racing, I was really impressed," Skinner said. "Especially after running prelims and then finals. We haven't done that at any meet all year. They handled that really well. They ran a personal best in the prelims and we were the only team that bettered the time from the prelims."

Marcus Seawood and Steven Lucas ran the final two legs. Fletcher and Burnett are juniors and will return.

In the boys' 1,600, Consol's Chase Teinert ran his best time of the year, 4:25.23, and finished eighth.

Bryan senior Fono Vakalahi was scheduled to throw the discus in the first flight. First, however, he needed to catch a flight to make it to the meet.

Vakalahi was a bronze medalist a year ago, missing state by three inches. This year he was the favorite to win, but he was still in another state, California, when the competition began because of a death in his family.

"I thought his chances were looking good," Bryan track coach Justin Smith said. "He tried his best to be here, but it didn't work out."

Vakalahi had a season-best throw of 193 feet, 3 inches, which he tossed at the Brenham regional qualifiers meet. The second-best throw in the region was 175-9 by Round Rock McNeil's Casey Strong.

"At regional qualifiers, he didn't throw anything under 180," Smith said. "He was really hitting his stride. Life happens and it's real unfortunate that he couldn't go out and compete, but you've got to understand him trying to meet his obligations with his family."

Richard Garrett of Garland Naaman Forest won the event with a throw of 181-4.

The Vikings' Michael Piatt cleared a career-high 13 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault in his first regional tournament, tying for seventh. Piatt moved up to a larger pole to clear the height for the first time in a competitive meet.

A more pressing matter for Piatt was getting his shoes tied before he vaulted.

"They always come loose once you run and run," Piatt said, laughing. "And I had wet socks."

Showers halted the pole vault several times, but it did not seem to affect Piatt, who stayed loose and joked between vaults.

"It wasn't bad," Piatt said. "It was fun landing in the pit when it was all soaking wet. I came in dry and came out soaked like I jumped into a pool. It was a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to coming back next year."

Consol's Catherine Chenault struggled on her opening pole vault, missing at her entry height of 9-0. She cleared it on her second attempt and was over on her first try at 9-6 before her regional experience ended, a foot off the 10-6 she vaulted at the District 12-5A meet.

Belton's Morgan Toone won with an 11-6 vault.
