Chase Teinert ran a gutty race to win the 800 meters.

Then the A&M Consolidated Tiger added a chaser.

Teinert completed one of track's most challenging two-fers Thursday, blasting to the finish of the 1,600 for his second gold medal of the day in the District 12-5A track and field meet at Tigerland Stadium.

"I was worried, but that race is all about pushing yourself as hard as you can," said Teinert after his 800 victory. "It's great, a good feeling. It's just very tiring."

Killeen Ellison won the boys team title with 140 points followed by Temple (102) and Copperas Cove (98). Consol took fourth with 78 points, while Bryan was fifth at 70.

Teinert won his first district title by finishing the 800 in 1 minute, 59.29 seconds. He took second in the event last season after a bought with mononucleosis. This year, Harker Heights' Kormarne Hassel set the pace for much of the race before Teinert prevailed in a shoulder-to-shoulder sprint to the finish. Consol's Jesse Hall, who had been close behind, also got past Kormarne near the finish to take second in 2:00.12.

While Teinert won a battle of wills in the 800, he put on a show of strength in the 1,600, running away from Ellison' Max Mayo to win in 4:33.59. Consol's Eugene Sohn finished fourth.

"It felt a lot easier, a lot more relaxed," Teinert said of the 1,600. "I just went out and ran again. It went off faster the first lap than it usually does. When they started, there were six guys in front of me. I felt like the race started on the first lap. It was almost like a second wind, and it felt really good."

Three Bryan Vikings -- Fono Vakalahi, Ty Spradlin and Tre Odom -- won their events impressively.

Vakalahi unleashed a career-best throw of 176 feet, 5 inches to win the discus over a stellar field. All six of the point-scorers threw over 151 feet and the medalists all exceeded 165.

Vakalahi's style and power blended perfectly with a crosswind that helped set up his throw. He threw long on the first attempt but was called for a foot foul.

"I wasn't expected to do that well, but there were a couple of words exchanged and it pumped me up a little bit," said Vakalahi, who missed qualifying for the state meet by 3 inches last year. "I came to compete today, I guess."

His second throw was high and well to the right, but it drew back into play perfectly for the winning mark. The senior, who has signed to play football at Brigham Young University, calmly stepped out of the back of the ring after issuing that challenge to the rest of his competitors.

Nobody matched it, but with the ability of Belton's silver medalist Kyle Voss (166-7) and Copperas Cove junior Anthony Mackey (165-9), the result remained in question until the final throw.

"I'm glad I had that wind because it helped me a lot," Vakalahi said. "There were a couple of good guys with Voss and [Mackey]. I wasn't sure I had it won, because I know that somebody could have had a good throw. It's not over 'til it's over."

Earlier in the meet, Bryan senior Spradlin won the high jump at 6-6. He overcame a miss at 6-2 that only briefly threatened his regional bid. He was the only jumper to clear on his fist try at 6-4, then he cleared 6-6 on his second attempt.

"I had to get my speed up and just drive straight up," said Spradlin, who also won the district title as a sophomore. "The wind kind of carried me in on the miss. There was a little bit of a tailwind, but it was a nice day to jump."

Spradlin failed to clear at 6-8, hitting the bar with his back.

"I hope to get 6-8," Spradlin said. "If I go higher than that, that's cool."

Consol's Steven Lucas placed third and advanced to regionals by clearing a career-best 6-4.

"I thought I showed a lot of speed, and my coach told me to just jump high and put my arms up," Lucas said. "That's my record and I almost had 6-6. I'm going to get it next time. I've never jumped against these guys, but they are pretty good."

Consol also took third in the 800 relay to qualify for regionals.

Odom opened the 200 with a great curve and had the lead when he hit the straightaway. He easily held off Copperas Cove's Williams Randolph, finishing in 22.37 to Randolph's 22.54.

Copperas Cove won the JV boys competition with 172 points. Consol was fifth with 65 points and Bryan took sixth with 60. The freshman boys title went to Belton with 138 points. Bryan scored 96 for fourth, and Consol took fifth with 77 1/2 points.
