COPPERAS COVE -- The drama played out simultaneously on opposite ends of Bulldawg Stadium on Thursday.

On the north side, A&M Consolidated's Andrew Fletcher took the more conventional route of a great athlete making an outstanding leap into gold medal territory.

To the south, Bryan's Mikey Piatt overcame a recent -- and serious -- injury to qualify for regionals in the pole vault for the second consecutive year. His path to success was significantly less conventional.

District 12-5A officials altered the schedule of its district track meet because of a fear of impending storms. The compressed schedule of field events did nothing to lessen the anticipation.

Fletcher entered the finals tied for second in the long jump with Killeen Shoemaker's Marcus Hinton. Fletcher leapt 22 feet, 1/2 inch on his initial attempt. He held the tie-breaking advantage for the silver medal but stepped just over the takeoff board on his first jump of the finals, which might have been his best.

"I was real confident and thought I could do it again, so it didn't make a big difference," said Fletcher of his career best, breaking the mark he had set at home at the Tiger Relays. "I hit a 22-4. I think the guys here pushed me more."

One jump later, Fletcher went farther, planting his foot midway across the board to move past Michael Anderson of Ellison by posting a career best jump of 22-6 1/2. He still had to sweat out Anderson's final jump, which was 22-5 1/2 for the silver. Hinton, who never improved in the finals, finished fourth.

Piatt, Bryan's only regional competitor, didn't wait to receive his bronze medal. He left the field with a large bag of ice on his left hand after surviving to compete in the 5A Region II meet.

Just getting to compete at district was quite an accomplishment.

"Two days before, I was [working out] in Jacksonville, and we were kind of simulating what I was going to do here and where I was going to come in," Piatt said. "I jumped 14, 14-6, 15 and 15-6 all on the first try. It was my third attempt at 16, and I snapped the pole right in two."

Piatt is not exactly sure how his hand was injured because the incident happened so quickly.

"I'm thinking I sprained my wrist because my wrist popped back," Piatt said. "The vibration of the pole was like when you get bad contact with a baseball bat and it rattles your hand."

A portion of the pole just missed his side, but he grabbed another pole and vaulted again immediately, a vaulter's way of getting back on the horse. His wrist did not immediately hurt, but his hand was swollen. A day before the meet, Piatt could barely get dressed in the morning.

X-rays were negative, but Piatt was advised not to compete. He politely refused.

After missing the district track meet his sophomore season with a severe ankle injury, he grabbed a pole Thursday unsure of whether he could vault or not. He cleared 13-6 on his only attempt and began to nurse his injured left hand.

Piatt trailed second-place Kyle Rhoads of Belton, who went 14-0 and winner Regan Gilbert of Harker Heights, who had a 15-0 vault, but Piatt almost finished a spot higher, when Gilbert struggled and nearly no-heighted, when he entered he competition at 14 feet.

“When I woke up this morning, I though there was no way I was going to jump, and I had been looking forward to this all year,” Piatt said. “I stood out on the track and looked at the pit, and said gosh, this is not how I wanted to feel today. I told myself that was going to just do one good jump to qualify.”

Bryan’s Nathan Brown was fifth and Consol’s Collin Beckman took sixth, with both clearing 12-6. The eight points that the Bryan pole vaulters scored accounted for all of their team points. The Vikings finished with eight points. Bryan’s girls were shut out for the meet.

By taking the second and third spots in the 1,600, the Consol Lady Tigers held off Shoemaker for third place in the team race with 90 points. The Lady Grey Wolves had 90. Harker Heights won the meet with 155 points and Ellison was second at 122.

While Belton’s Regan Tindell pulled away from the start to win the 1,600 in 5:16.36, A&M Consolidated, Karis Jochen and Sally Hays raced against one another for second after the pair moved past Belton’s Katelin Huckabee. In the heaviest rain of the meet, Jochen held off Hays to take the silver medal in 5:28.06, with her teammate just over her shoulder. Hays ran 5:28.13. It was a flip-flop from their order of finish in the 3,200 a day earlier.

The Consol girls got their only field event qualifier Thursday in the high jump, where Jesse Drummond returned to regional with a 5-0 jump and a third-place finish. Karla Gilbert, a regional qualifier in the shot put Wednesday, was alternate in the discus with a fourth-place throw of 103-7. She and Victoria Quintana will both throw at the regional meet in the discus.

Fourth place was the best individual finish for any of the A&M Consolidated boys. Kareem Ishaq ran 50.56 for that spot in the 400. Tre’vion Watson was closing fast on third place in the 300-meter hurdles, but hit the next-to-last hurdle and placed fourth with a time of 39.76.

Ellison raced to the boys’ team victory with 165 points, with Copperas Cove second at 137. A&M Consolidated scored 46 points for sixth place.

Before rain showers arrived but did not delay the meet, Consol had five fives. The Lady Tigers were fifth in the 400 relay (49.61), and also got fifth-place finishes from Chaiss Matthews (2:25.26) in the 800, Ashley Adeyemi (15.87) in the 100 hurdles and Unique King (12.9) in the 100 meters. The Lady Tigers’ 800-meter relay quartet placed fifth, clocked at 1:46.56. Running in the rain, Marika Houston also finished fifth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.37.

The Tigers’ Michael McClendon scored points in two events, with a throw of 48-11 3/4 for fifth place in the shot. He discus throw of 147-1 netted sixth.
