Their coach believes the A&M Consolidated girls could be good if everybody shows up and competes well at the District 12-5A track meet in a couple of weeks. Even without a full lineup, they were the best team at the James Giese Tiger Relays.

The Lady Tigers repeated as team champions, scoring 138 points Thursday for a comfortable victory over Lufkin (97) despite missing a few proven point producers.

Consol’s girls got a victory from Victoria Quintana in the shot put, while Chaiss Matthews won the 1,600 meters, took third in the 800 and ran on the 1,600 relay team that finished fourth in a season-best time. Ashley Adeyemi boosted the Lady Tigers by taking second in the 100 hurdles and third in the triple jump.

“I feel really good about where we are headed as far as district in two weeks,” Consol coach Rodney Wellmann said. “I’d like to see us having our entire team together. Every week we’ve missed people. At district, that will be our first opportunity where we have everyone. If they perform at the level they can, then we’re going to be good.”

The Consol boys got a good day from Kareem Ishaq, who finished second in the triple jump and the 400 in addition to running the lead leg on the 1,600 relay team that took second. The Tigers scored 107 points to claim second place behind Klein Oak’s 143.

Although the boys improved by two spots at their home meet from last year, Consol coach Mike Skinner was hoping for more going into the evening running finals.

“We qualified well, and I don’t feel like we took care of business when it came to the finals,” Skinner said. “Even though we had a pretty solid team performance, I’d like to see us move up a spot [from their qualifying place] in the finals instead of moving back. I think those are things that we’re going to have to work on, even though we are getting better.”

Consol will compete in the District 12-5A meet at Copperas Cove on April 14-15.

The Lady Tigers were without some potential scorers, including thrower Karla Gilbert and high jumper Jesse Drummond, who were involved in other competitions. They combined to score 20 points three weeks ago at Kingwood. Quintana picked up some of the slack with a winning effort of 38-3 1/2 in the shot put that was 8 feet more than she threw early in March.

“She stepped up huge with Karla at the McDonald’s [basketball] game,” Wellmann said.

Matthews won the 1,600 in 5:22.34. She came back to take third in the 800 at 2:23.89 and later ran the opening leg on the 1,600 relay team that posted a season-best time of 4:09.13.

“She ran a fantastic leg on the 4 x 400,” Wellmann said. “I told her after that race that this was a fantastic meet for her.”

Consol’s revamped 400 relay unit of Karrian Chambers, Markea Johnson, Jazz Harris and Unique King established a new season standard with a time of 49.66 that was second behind Clear Brook’s 49.06. Harris moved up from the JV to join fellow freshman Johnson on the relay.

“I’m really proud of that performance,” Wellmann said. “To have two freshmen on the team and run 49.66, that’s exceptional.”

The Lady Tigers also won the shuttle hurdle relay and got a third place from Katy Williams in the 3,200 and a fourth by Abby Piper in the high jump.

For the Consol boys, the versatile Ishaq earned silver in the triple jump (43-10) and 400 meters (50.01). He also teamed with Tyler Phillips, Ray Richards and Tre’vion Watson to post a season-best time of 3:25 in the 1,600 relay. Klein Oak put the finishing touches on its team championship by winning in 3:23.20.

Ishaq did not clear 6 feet and failed to place on a windy afternoon in the high jump, an event he won last week at Klein with a leap of 6-4.

“He had a great day,” Skinner said. “The high jump was a place where we could have got some more points.

“Our best previous [in the 1,600 relay] was 3:28. We almost took off four seconds tonight, and I think we’ve got another two, maybe three, seconds that we can go. In our district, 3:22 is going to be right in the mix to [make regionals].”

Andrew Pittman (43-8) and Quinton White (43-3 1/2) combined with Ishaq to give Consol a 2-3-4 finish in the triple jump.

The Tigers also scored well in the long jump, with Andrew Fletcher finishing second at 22-4 1/2 and Chris Nutall (21-5 1/2) taking fourth while White (21-2 1/2) was fifth.

Watson captured second place in the 300 hurdles with a clocking of 40.71. He was the second-fastest qualifier in the 100 hurdles, but fell in the final and did not finish.

Michael McClendon took third in the discus with a toss of 161-9. Stephen Case finished fourth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:31.36.
