Morgan Hartmann had a history of heartbreak at district meets, so the A&M Consolidated distance runner had reason to flash back when she ran the 3,200 meters Wednesday.

Instead, Hartmann had a big lead and could glance back as she entered the home stretch at Tigerland Stadium. Hartmann surged to a convincing victory that paced a 1-2-3 Consol finish in the event and capped a successful opening day for the Lady Tigers at the District 12-5A track and field meet.

Consol's girls scored 24 points in the final event of the day after notching 15 points earlier in the discus. That superiority sent the Lady Tigers to a solid lead in the team standings going into the final day of the meet. Consol has 42 points, with Harker Heights in second at 21 and Killeen Ellison and Temple tied with 18.

The Bryan girls did not score during Wednesday's three field events or in the 3,200. The Lady Vikings expect to fare better, and contend for regional berths, during Thursday's running finals.

Thursday's schedule was moved up because of the threat of bad weather, with field events to begin at 10 a.m. and running finals at 2 p.m.

The weather should be beautiful if those moves are as good as the one Hartmann made on the back stretch during the seventh of eight laps. Hartmann and teammates Chase Matthews and Katy Williams were in a lead pack with Belton's Courtney White, then Hartmann picked up her pace and charged to her first victory of the year. Her time of 11 minutes, 49 seconds was just 4 seconds off her career best even though she wasn't pressed at the end.

"I felt like I had to go then," Hartmann said. "It's my last year, and I wanted to finish strong. I just tried to go and hope that nobody could stay with me."

Hartmann had finished fourth in the 3,200 at district in her first three years, missing a trip to regionals by one place each time. Last year, she was edged by about 1.6 seconds in a sprint to the finish line.

"I was really determined," Hartmann said. "It gave me more incentive to get into the top three and go to region. This felt really good. It was almost unbelievable. I wasn't sure if I could do that."

Freshman Matthews took second place in 11:58.59, and junior Williams secured her first regional berth by finishing third in 11:59.29. Consol's sweep of the regional bids was official about half an hour later, after the meet referee denied a protest by Belton officials who argued that one of their runners had been fouled midway through the race.

Consol senior Haley Thompson earned a redemptive trip to regionals by finishing second in the high jump. Thompson matched her personal best by clearing 5 feet, 4 inches on her first attempt. She settled for the silver medal when Killeen Shoemaker's Jahyda Reed cleared 5-6 on her final attempt.

Thompson was expected to contend for a regional bid last year, but had a tough day and missed the top three.

"I really wish I could have gotten 5-6, but I felt like I was jumping very consistently," Thompson said. "I'm not disappointed at all. I'm going to regionals.

"Last year I let a lot of the jumpers get into my head, and I didn't know if I could do that good. I wasn't as confident then. I've been doing super-good this year, so I was definitely a lot more confident."

Consol's Jesse Drummond cleared 5-2 and earned third place on fewer misses, qualifying for regionals for the second consecutive year. Drummond missed regional track last spring to compete on the gymnastics team, but she is concentrating on track this year.

The Lady Tigers added another point in the event when Abby Piper tied for fifth place by clearing 5 feet.

"The high jump is just so unpredictable," Consol coach Rodney Wellmann said. "But today, the girls took all that unpredictability out. It's a huge lift for us."

Consol also got points from juniors Ashley Adeyemi and Karla Gilbert. Adeyemi went 34-10 1/2 to take fifth in the triple jump. Gilbert finished sixth in the discus with a personal best of 107-1.

The Lady Tigers qualified three runners for the 100 hurdles final, with Adeyemi posting the fastest time at 16.04.

Bryan's Shelby McGee (13.15) and Consol's Unique King (13.28) qualified in the 100. The Lady Tigers put Marikia Houston and Adeyemi into the 300 hurdles final, while Lady Viking Ashley Maxwell qualified in the 200.
