AUSTIN -- The skies cleared and the sun shone on the UIL Track & Field State Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Saturday.

By the final Class 2A girls race, the Centerville Lady Tigers had made it golden.

Sophomore Callie Padgett ran a 56.95-second anchor leg to power Centerville's 1,600-meter relay team to victory and a share of the team championship.

A full 5 meters behind the leader when she hit the final straightaway, Padgett blew past Elkhart anchor Rachel Teetz with 50 meters left for the double gold finish.

"I just really wanted it," said Padgett, who ran the 800 at state last year. "I just said it's all or nothing. It's really exciting because everybody is cheering for you. It's showing everybody what we can do. It's finishing the race and accomplishing something, knowing that we get to go up [to the award stand]."

The perfect weather belied the fact that the Lady Tigers needed a perfect storm in the final relay to win the title. Centerville had to win with Rice Consolidated finishing no higher than fifth, and the Lady Tigers got both as Rice Consolidated placed fifth.

Centerville finished in a season-best 3 minutes, 59.66 seconds, beating second-place Elkhart (4:00.85). With the victory, the Lady Tigers scored 36 team points in their two relays. The 20 team points for the 1,600 relay victory pushed Centerville from 12th place into a tie with Rice Consolidated, which began the final event tied with Childress for the team lead at 32 points.

The final-act drama wouldn't have mattered if Centerville hadn't held off Rice Consolidated in a toe-to-toe battle for second in the 800 relay.

Hannah Word's strong opening leg set up a scintillating second half of the race for Centerville. Freshman Maygn Harris staged a side-by-side duel with Rice Consolidated's Clarencia Weeks on the third leg, then anchor Kayla Brewer came from behind on the final turn and passed the Lady Raiders' Felice Smith halfway down the home stretch. Centerville finished in 1:45.01, just behind Marlin. Rice Consolidated had to settle for third at 1:45.03.

In the 1,600 relay, Centerville senior Kelsey Lagrone ran her best opening leg of the season, handing over to Brewer, who set up Harris' strong third leg.

The team title was just part of the Brazos Valley's strong showing this weekend in Austin, a performance capped by Navasota's Rodney Brown in the 3A boys discus.

Brown won with a toss of 174 feet, 8 inches but had trouble with the wet ring.

"Once you got to the front of the ring, it was kind of slippery," said Brown, who entered the meet with a 3A-leading throw of 198-6. "I really don't want to make excuses. It was a little bit of the ring, but that just happens."

Yoakum's William Markert placed second at 174-7, while Rockdale's LeRaven Clark threw a career-best 164-3 on his first attempt for the bronze.

In the shot put later in the day, Brown had two fouls and finished eighth with a throw of 47-5.

Even when they weren't winning, Brazos Valley athletes found silver linings.

Madisonville's Brock Taylor had an exceptional start in the 3A boys 100, taking second in 10.84 behind West Orange-Stark's Trey Franks (10.62).

"I had them for awhile, but Franks came up at the end," Taylor said. "Second again. I wanted first before I graduated."

Taylor had also won the silver medal at the state meet his sophomore season.

"Good hard work finally pays off," said Taylor, who had a knee injury that slowed him as a junior. "Because I'm a senior, it felt good to get back up there [on the medal stand]."

Lexington's Clint Hutson and Hughes Springs' Brent Giddens turned the 2A boys 110-meter hurdles into a match race, jumping quickly ahead of the field. Giddens edged out Hutson, who made it close with a lunge at the finish. Giddens won in 14.78, denying Hutson (14.83) from repeating as the state champion.

The hotly-competitive Hutson enjoyed having his best competition at his side.

"It actually helps a lot, because you either have somebody pull you along or you're pulling him along behind you," Hutson said. "It makes the race real tight, but then it turns into something really technical, too. Hurdles is a race of technicality. You don't think about it during the race. It has to be almost like a reaction."

Late Friday, after an extended rain delay, Hutson claimed fourth in the long jump at 21-7.

Cameron's Dave Brown had his best effort of the spring against District 24-3A and 3A Region III triple jump champion Mark Jackson of Taylor. Jackson won at 49-8 3/4, while Brown took second at 48-8 1/4.

The back-track story between the two is a long one.

"We've been competing against each other since I was a freshman," Brown said. "I always told him I was going to beat him, and I thought today might be the day. It wasn't.

"I ended up second again, but I got this," he added, holding up his silver medal.

Hearne freshman Re'Jana Ellison reached the medal stand twice Saturday.

In the 2A girls 100, Ellison took third with her time of 12.50.

"Since I'm only a freshman, I think what I've done is extraordinary," Ellison said. "When [the starter] said go, the back of my block pushed down, so I kind of had a rocky race, but I came back. I was in fourth, but I pulled out third."

Ellison had a better start in the 200 and earned another bronze medal, finishing third in 25.34.

In the 3A boys 400 relay, Liberty-Eylau's Marquez Clark slipped ahead on the final handoff and held off Cameron's Elmo Haynes on the anchor leg to take the bronze medal. The Yoemen drew the difficult Lane 8 but got off to a good start on Tommy Anderson's opening leg. Decrick Westbrook and Quinn Haynes kept Cameron in medal contention until the end of its fourth-place run.

Rockdale sophomore hurdler Daniel Brooks appeared to be in medal position over the last hurdles despite hitting two in his 3A boys 110 hurdle race, but he lost his balance and fell. He bounced across the finish line sixth in 15.14.

Caldwell's Emily Surovik was sixth in the 3A girls pole vault in her second state appearance. She cleared the opening height of 9-0. Argyle's Jessie Johnson won by vaulting 12-0.

Cameron's Maeson Mondrik was sixth in the 3A girls 100 in 12.60.

Lagrone, Centerville's senior all-around athlete, was eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 34-7. Karnes City's Brittany Kinney won with a 38-0 leap.

Franklin's Janie Neyland placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.60.
