Bryan's Dexter Comeaux competes in the high jump Friday at the Bryan ISD Invitational at Merrill Green Stadium.

The Bryan ISD Invitational is the track meet formerly known as the Viking Relays.

A young group of Lady Viking sprinters ran as though they were trying to make a name for themselves Friday. Led by first- and third-place finishes from freshmen in the 100 meters, Bryan scored 68 points to take fifth in the girls' competition at the meet the Vikings now co-host with Rudder.

Marquisha Lee shot to the lead in her heat of the 100 and was never challenged as she finished in 13.23 seconds.

"I was just focused on the goal, and my coach has told me to never let down," said Lee, who raced though the finish. "Usually, I think about who is behind me, so I keep going faster and faster."

No one was close in her heat, but teammate Tydesja Mathis was third, with a time of 13.33, trailing second-place Ariana Pierre from Klein Oak, who ran 13.3.

Drisha Irvin ran a time of 26.87 to claim the silver medal in the 200, a race won by Klein Oak's Kendrah Wren, who ran 25.86.

"We are really young with several sophomores and freshmen, and the experience is beginning to come through for us," Bryan girls' coach Matt Rice said. "We're learning some things, especially on the relays."

Bryan, which took silver in the 400-meter relay in a season-best 50.01, won the 800-meter relay and reached a goal set by Rice.

"We ran a decent time last week with three really bad handoffs, so I have been pumping them up with a time all week," said Rice, whose 800-meter relay quartet ran 1:45.81. "We've got to run 1:46. All it is, is handoffs. That relay team of Drisha Irvin, Trenice Barnes, Khadizah Brisby and Keneisha Burns finished it for us. It was sophomore, sophomore, sophomore, senior."

Rudder's Lamaria Cole accounted for most of the Lady Rangers' points. She won the high jump. A Region III-3A qualifier a year ago, Cole leaped a career best of 5-2. Cole, a standout on Rudder's regional semifinalist basketball team, jumped 17-8 for fourth place in the long jump and contributed to a fifth-place finish in the sprint relay.

Lufkin, which won four events, including two relays, won the girls' team championship with 144 points. Spring placed second with 94.

In the boys' competition, Bryan's Kevin Jefferson was the last sprinter out of the blocks in his heat of the 100 meters. He recovered and pushed past Klein Oak's Cory Abron to win is heat. The time of 11.29 placed him third overall behind Spring's Ridgeway Frank, who ran 10.94.

Spring, sporting a Superman 'S' on its green running jersey, won the sprint relay and the 800 relay and finished ahead of Klein Oak in the 1,600 relay. However, Oak's fourth-place finish allowed the Panthers to hold on to the team title with 143 points, three-and-a-half more points than Spring. Bryan finished ninth with 27 points.

Despite the poor start, Jefferson displayed plenty of strength at the finish of his 100 meters.

"When he shot the gun, the gun didn't pop," Jefferson said. "He had to click it twice, so the other dudes got a quicker start than me. At about 75 yards, I felt like I had to push some more to catch them. I got by about 10 yards from the finish."

Jefferson also ran a leg on the Vikings' fourth-place 400-meter relay team, which finished in 43.17.

Bryan's Mikey Piatt was second in the pole vault at 13-6.

Junior Matt Cohan had the highest finish for the Rudder boys. His throw of 137-11 netted third in the discus. Alvin Moore narrowly missed a shot at a medal in the high jump, dragging his heel to miss at 6-2. He placed fifth at 6-0, falling shy of his career best.
