Bryan boys win district track meet; Consol girls second

TEMPLE -- Bryan's Monterell Washington held off Lache Seastrunk on the final leg of the District 13-5A boys' 1,600-meter relay, but the Temple sophomore was closing at the finish.

The Vikings, in the meantime, were closing the deal.

Bryan added a win in the 800 relay, pulling away from the Wildcats to score 148 points and win the team title, the Vikings' first since 2001.

Temple finished 19 points back.

"I told my boys in the stands if they give me a lead, I'm not going to let them down," Washington said. "I knew [Seastrunk] was coming in with the fastest time in the state in the 100, and I just had to hold him off.

P.J. Fisher, who would later win the 400 in 49.98 seconds, ran an outstanding curve on the third leg to give the Vikings a cushion heading into the final 100 meters. It was his first sprint relay of the spring.

"We had some injuries during the season," Fisher said. "You know, when duty calls, you've got to go get it."

The Vikings got individual event wins from Fisher in the 400 and Fono Vakalahi in the discus and sent a pair of competitors to the regional meet in the 200 and 110-meter hurdles. But the real clincher was the 1,600 relay.

"I could tell [Seastrunk] was there, because as I was going, the crowd was getting louder and louder," Washington said. "I knew he was coming. He was pretty close. I know it."

The winning time of 41.60 was the fastest run this year by Bryan.

"Our guys were just a little more focused today, had a little different look in their eyes," Bryan coach Justin Smith said. "They went after it. We had been telling them all week to go do their job, and that's what they did."

A&M Consolidated's Whitney Harris fell 60 meters short of a triple victory, blistering the competition in the 100 and 400 and finishing second in the 200. Harris struggled to the finish line in the 200, but was comfortably in second place behind Killeen Ellison's Kehri Jones, who ran 24.74.

At the conclusion of the 400, which Harris won with a time of 56.15, her legs cramped and she had to roll on her back to get her legs into her warmup pants.

"After the 400, it got really tight, but I had to get through it, pull through and try to win the 200," Harris said. "I was breaking down.

Harris also won the 100 (11.92) and was second in the long jump at 16 feet, 9 inches. She said she considered stopping in the 200.

"I thought about it but it wasn't me," Harris said. "I want to finish. I thought all I have to do is get second but I didn't want to stress [my hamstring muscle], so I just let her go on and get it."

Despite Harris's heroics, Harker Heights beat A&M Consolidated for the girls team title, 146-131.

Bryan's Pashe Moore, who started the Lady Vikings' silver medalist 400-meter relay team, was ruled the winner of the 100-meter hurdles in 14.88 after a long look at the photo from meet officials. Moore had a minuscule edge over Harker Heights' Jasmine Tucker over the last hurdle. The pair raced almost dead even throughout the race.

"I couldn't miss her, so I was just running as fast as I can," Moore said. "I felt I gained over each of the last three hurdles. A little bit."

Moore also took third in the 300 hurdles, clocked at 46.78.

Keri Wood, a state finalist the 1,600 a year ago, doubled in the 800 and 1,600. Wood ran 2:13.92 in the 800, overtaking Belton's Skylor Alford, who sprinted to the lead early. Wood broke away late and used her kick again down the stretch to solidify the victory in the 1,600 with a time of 5:09.7.

The A&M Consolidated boys controlled the distance races. Morrell Munyon (1:59.1) and Chase Teinert (2:01.09) were 1-2 in the 800. Chris Florian took first in the 1,600 at 4:32.36, and his Tiger teammate Stephen Case was third at 4:37.18.

Teinert was coming off a bout with mononucleosis.

"I got it before the first meet, missed three meets, but came back and ran about four meets," said Teinert, who won the race at the JV level last year. "I just wanted to get behind my teammate Morrell. He does great."

Temple's Daniel Carr edged out Bryan's Michael Mims for third in the high jump with a jump-off clearance at 6-1, but Mim' persistence was rewarded. He qualified for regionals in the 110 hurdles, where he was second at 14.85. Robert Robinson was third.

C.J. Demouchette ran on both of Bryan's winning relay teams, swapping positions from his usual anchor and running a strong second leg in the 800 relay. He also took second in the 100 to Prezel Hardy of Killeen Ellison, who ran 10.53. Demouchette's time was 10.57.

Andre Carter (22.29) and Tre Odom (22.4) were second and third in the 200.

A&M Consolidated pole vaulters Kris Wulfson and Sam Villacin earned return trips to the Region II-5A meet. Villacin took second on a windy east runway behind Belton junior Morgan Toone, who vaulted 12-0.

The Consol vaulters matched their 2007 jumps by clearing 10-6. Villacin, who finished fourth at the 2007 regional meet, struggled early, failing to clear on her entry height of 9-0.

As he did Thursday in the long jump, Bryan's Jaron Gentry fought his way into a regional spot in the triple jump. Entering the finals in fourth place, the Viking senior improved on every jump, finishing second to Temple's Tevin Reese with a jump of 45-0. Reese's winning jump was 46-8 1/2.

A&M Consolidated's protest, which started Thursday, was not finalized until the conclusion of the 1,600-meter run. Kat Bartley was in second place after three jumps in the triple jump but was disqualified for wearing an earring. Consol had contended that Bartley had not been warned and her legal jumps should have counted, but the ruling stood.
