Day 2 of the Texas Summer Grand Slam kicked off in style all across the Bryan-College Station area Saturday

A&M Consolidated's Frankie Colunga just missed splitting sets before losing to Parker McGuiness of McKinney 6-2, 7-6 (3) at Texas A&M's Mitchell Tennis Center.

Colunga beat Richardson's Nicolas Erturkuner 7-6 (3), 6-1 in the first round of the tournament. Colunga will play in the consolation bracket at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Mitchell Center.

"My early match, I played pretty well," Colunga said. "It was windy, and I had a tough tiebreaker, but I pulled away in the second set. In my second match, I played kind of sloppy in the first set, but I pulled it together in the second. It was just a well-played match, and [McGuiness] got the better of me."

Colunga had trouble with his serve and backhand in the first set against McGuiness. He made adjustments in the second, rallying to tie the set at 5-5 and forcing his second tiebreaker of the day.

"In the first set, I don't know what I was doing," Colunga said. "I just had to figure out what was wrong. I tried to run around my backhand and then spin it in. With my serve, I was focusing on getting it in consistently. It started to click at the very end, but he played a great match."

Tournament delays meant that had Colunga forced a third set, he and McGuiness would've played a super-tiebreaker to 10 to decide the match.

As it was, Colunga's second round match lasted 1 hour, 45 minutes. The start time was pushed back over an hour as tournament officials waited for a court to clear.

In the potent Texas heat and humidity, eight players withdrew from the boys 16 bracket alone in the first two rounds Saturday. Though not all of the withdrawals were necessarily related to temperature, the players on the court during the afternoon matches clearly were battling the heat as much as their opponents.

Colunga, at least, had a bit of a homecourt advantage to help him through the long match. He hopes it will serve him well Sunday in consolation play.

"My family, my sister and her boyfriend and some of my friends were all out cheering, which was nice," Colunga said. "It's nice to sleep in my own bed. I'm just going to get some rest, get up early and warm up, then hopefully do well in consolation."

NOTES -- Both the boys and girls 18, 16 and 14 singles brackets started play Saturday. The boys and girls 12 singles brackets will begin Monday. Five of the six doubles brackets are in the round of 32, while the girls 14 doubles are in the round of 16.
