AUSTIN -- Kayla Casey wears much smaller shoes than Austin Klores.

That doesn't mean she can't follow in her fellow Franklin Lion's footsteps.

Casey won her second consecutive Class 2A singles championship Tuesday, rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sunnyvale's Emily Lobnitz at the UIL State Tennis Tournament.

"It wasn't as exciting as my semifinal match because it was not as much of a challenge," Casey said. "I was on today, really."

Klores began a four-year string of state championships his freshman season in 2005 with a victory in boys singles. Casey, a sophomore, is now two for two, keeping alive a string of six straight years with a singles championships for Franklin.

If the string continues next year, Casey won't be the one to keep it going. She plans to play doubles with her younger sister, Carrie, next year.

This year's title run marked the second straight time that Casey lost a set in her semifinal match before winning comfortably in the championship. In her victory Monday over Maypearl's Tali Dollar she dropped the opening set 7-5 before winning the final two sets 6-3, 6-1.

"That first set I was really hitting hard and playing tough, but it was close," Casey said of Monday's match. "I decided that wasn't going to work, so I just was more consistent and started hitting it in."

Casey credited Dollar for making the match so tough.

"I lost in the first set, just like last year, but I didn't play well then," Casey said. "This year she was really good, so it was close."

Lobnitz had lost only three games at state before Tuesday's final.

Casey shared the spotlight last year with her older sister, Kendra, who won the mixed doubles state title with Jake Russ.

"I like playing with my sister and it was fun to have her there, but I played a lot better this year," Kayla Casey said. "I felt a lot better and played a lot better."
