Familiarity could breed a championship and a couple of regional bids for local teams in the girls doubles portion of the District 12-5A tennis tournament.

The single-elimination tourney will be played Wednesday and Thursday at Temple High School. The top two finishers in each division will qualify for the Class 5A Region II tournament in Waco on April 20-21.

A&M Consolidated and Bryan produced the top three seeds in the girls doubles bracket. Four of those players reached the 12-5A semifinal round last year, with three making it to the regional tournament.

Consol's Nellie Hillner and Kristina Raphael are the top seeds and favorites to win the district title. Both Lady Tigers reached the Region II tournament last season playing with different partners, when Hillner and Amanda Trapani won a three-set final over Raphael and Sarah Colunga.

AshLee Bilbo and Madison Franze of Bryan are seeded second. Last year, Franze made the regional tourney in mixed doubles, while Bilbo was fourth in girls doubles.

The third seeds are Lady Tigers Sarah Solcher and Erin Briers. The other local entry is Bryan's Helen Ask and Christine Ehresman.

Consol features the No. 1 seeds in every category except one. The Tigers' top seeds include Frankie Colunga in boys singles, Chris Walter and Joon Eoh in boys doubles, along with Mason Cote and Mariah York in mixed doubles.

The Tigers won the district championship during the team tennis competition last fall. Consol has won the district title in the spring during each of coach Stephen Mercer's three seasons.

Two weeks ago, the Tigers finished sixth in a powerful field at the Consol tournament.

"If we play with heart, which is the way we've played this year, it's very feasible that we could get six or seven entries out to regionals," Mercer said.

Entries will need three victories Wednesday to advance to the finals and third-place matches scheduled for Thursday morning. If the second-place finisher has not faced the entry that takes third, they will be required to have a play-back match to determine the second regional qualifier.

Mercer believes Consol's No. 2 boys doubles team of Dillon Anderson and Tyler Campbell will have a chance to make regionals along with teammates Eoh and Walter. The top seeds were paired after an injury to Ben Walter prevented him from playing with his brother. Chris Walter finished third in boys singles at last year's district meet.

This spring, top seed Colunga will be joined in boys singles by Pablo Espinosa of Consol, along with Jacob Atkins and Shaun Palmer for Bryan.

Bryan coach Randy Stewart believes Atkins could make a run at a regional bid. The Vikings also have contenders in boys doubles with the teams of Shawn Grienert and Hunter Casarez, plus Eduardo Cisneros and Hassan Mahmood.

In girls singles, Lady Tiger Victoria Liere is the No. 3 seed. The bracket includes Consol's Betsy Haberl and Lady Vikings Vanessa Ponce and Kayla Siegert.

The draw for mixed doubles includes Jack Lestina and Miranda Barzilla of Consol. The Viking entries will be Luis Morales and Katy Lutz, plus Eleazar Morales with Madison Hoover.
