A&M Consolidated's Anik Cepeda took advantage of a windy day to defeat The Woodlands' Abby Hayley and win the girls' singles championshp at Consol's Tiger Classic on Saturday.

Cepeda's, whose game was complemented by the wind, mixed the pace of her attack nicely to beat Hayley 6-2, 6-2 at the Texas A&M Intramural Courts.

"The wind was something you had to take into account, but I don't think it was that bad," said Cepeda, who has signed to play college tennis at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. "Especially when I'm with the wind, I try to put a little bit more pace on the ball, a little more spin so that it kicks up more. I can get the short ball easier and put it away, and I think I won most of my net points."

Cepeda and Hayley were doubles partners at the Grand Slam Tournament last summer and Hayley blasted some dramatic passing shots.

"Abby packs a punch for such a little girl," Cepeda said. "It's not good to give her any shots in the middle of the court."

There were five consecutive breaks of service in the first set. Cepeda held serve into the wind for a 5-2 lead before closing it out.

The players never reached deuce in the fast-moving match that saw Cepeda jump to a 4-1 advantage in the second set. She also finished the match with a service break.

Cepeda will play at the Gallery Furniture tournament in Houston next week prior to the District 12-5A tournament in Waco, where she will be favored to win the girls' single title.

"If all goes well at district, then I'm looking to play at regionals, and I really want to have a shot to go to state this year," Cepeda said.

Consol's 32-school tournament concluded Saturday with two doubles teams joining Cepeda as finalists.

San Antonio MacArthur's Mitch Saltzstein and Wes Stahl provided the roadblock for a pair of local teams. They won the boys doubles title, but got a severe challenge in the semifinals from Bryan's Michael Martin and Matt Hillestad, who lost the opening set 6-4 but rallied 6-2 in the second. In a third set played as a super-tiebreaker, the MacArthur team won 10-5, building an early 4-1 lead and never trailing.

"I wish it had been a third set," Hillestad said. "The 10-point tiebreaker is all how the start is, and we started off slow. They got a lead and just finished it off."

Consol's Nathan Cooner and Carlos Aguilar lost to Saltzstein and Stahl in the final. The Tigers led 3-1 in the second set, but Saltzsetein and Stahl ran off five straight games to lock up the 6-2, 6-3 victory and the title.

"It was frustrating because we got down early in this one," Cooner said. "It's a match you know you can win, and when things don't go your way, it's frustrating.

The Tigers had their own intense semifinal, outlasting the Richland team of Martiz Huff and Steven Cochran 6-7, 6-3, 10-8. In the third set, the Tigers built a 9-6 advantage. Richland cut it to 9-8, but Aguilar finished off the match with a pair of high backhand volleys, the second of which sent Consol to the finals.

"Nathan was fired up," Aguilar said. "He's usually like that, while I'm more passive and calm. When it was 9-8, I told him I was going to poach on this one. I poached, and it was a success."

Bryan's Martin and Hillestad beat the Richland team in the third-place match 6-4, 6-4.

"Even after that tough loss [in the semifinals], we played great and did the same things," Martin said. "We came out hitting."

Two Consol girls doubles teams qualified for the semfinals and found a similar nemesis as the same duo cut down both teams short of the title.

Southlake Carroll's Christine Boissevain and Lyndsay Walter defeated Bryan's Sarah Colunga and Kristina Raphael in one semifinal 6-2, 6-1, then they won the title with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Consol's Amanda Trapani and Nellie Hilner.

Colunga and Raphael finished fourth.
