A&M Consolidated's boys lost their grip on the district swimming championship Saturday, but coach Ryan Goodwyn held on to the notion that the Tigers are the best team in District 12-5A.

Belton finished ahead of Consol by a 148-139 margin at the Texas A&M Student Rec Center Natatorium, stopping the Tigers' streak of four consecutive years as the district champions.

On the girls side, Consol overwhelmed the field to regain the title after settling for second place last year. The Lady Tigers scored 200 points, more than double the 99 total for runner-up Belton.

Bryan's boys took third place with 73 points, while the Lady Vikings were fifth after scoring 53.

There was never any doubt about Consol's girls winning the team title, leaving the battle between the Belton and Consol boys to provide the drama. Consol's Hayden Duplechain won two individual events and was named boys swimmer of the meet, but Belton took the 200-yard freestyle relay and finished 1-2 in the next event, the 100 backstroke, to build a lead that stood up even after Consol won the 400 freestyle relay to end the meet.

Goodwyn said his team's winning streak ended because Belton's boys tapered workouts to place more importance than usual on the district meet, while Consol aimed to peak at the regional in two weeks.

"I still feel like we're the best team on both sides," Goodwyn said. "My guys were a little frustrated to walk in and see that Belton had shaved down and tapered. Basically, they brought their A game, which you usually save for regionals. The same thing happened on the girls side last year. Temple tapered for district, and then we killed them at regionals. That shows who the better team in district is."

Duplechain claimed gold in the 200 individual medley (1:59.02) and 100 breaststroke (1:01.30), winning top swimmer honors on a points system based on individual finishes and times. The junior's breaststroke leg keyed Consol's win in the 200 medley relay, and he also anchored the 400 freestyle relay.

Katie Hirsch, another junior from Consol, was named girls swimmer of the meet. Hirsch finished first in the 50 freestyle (25.65) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.71), where she broke the school record. She also swam the leadoff leg on the teams that won gold in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Consol's girls also got two individual championships apiece from junior Erin VandeVanter and sophomore Robyn Miller. VandeVanter won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, while Miller finished first in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.

"The girls came in and took care of business," Goodwyn said. "They commanded the meet the whole way."

Stacie O'Shea earned Consol's other individual gold in the 100 butterfly (1:02.49) and swam on two winning relays.

Bryan produced a pair of 12-5A champions. Sophomore Melissa Williams repeated as the winner in the 100 freestyle (56.86), and junior Cullen Tolmsoff was part of the meet's only gold-medal tie, matching Brandon Salter of Harker Heights with a time of 23.06 in the 50 freestyle.

"As far as performance, this is the best meet I've coached in the three years since I've been here," Bryan coach Mike Ortiz said. "Everybody from prelims to finals dropped time, and I'm very impressed and very proud of them.

"Cullen is up-and-coming as a sprinter. This year he dedicated his training to sprinting, and it's worked out pretty good. Melissa's been out with a hurt knee, but she's still persevered and did very well."

The top six finishers in each event earned berths in the Region III meet in Mansfield on Feb. 12.

Bryan qualifiers include Briana Criaco, Makayla Walker, Sabine Fletcher, Johanna Krauter, Alex Manzano and Angela Criaco on the girls side. The Viking boys regional entries joining Tolmsoff are David Godinez, Cody Smith and Dorian Galindo.

The Consol girls regional qualifiers include Kristen Ackerman, Kelli Klein, Meghan Strawser, Kim McDonald, Teresa deFigueiredo, Maddie Hirsch, Angela Yip, Shelby Buenger and Emma Griffith. The Tiger boys contingent to Mansfield will include Alec Kenerley, Maurico Zambrano, Taylor Greiger, Christopher Munster, Cody Green, Fernando Zambrano, Caleb Appleton and Ryan Olivieri.
