It was evident before the meet began what the final team result would be. The pool at the Texas A&M Student Rec Center Natatorium tilted to one side with A&M Consolidated having about three times as many swimmers as Bryan.
Consol won the boys competition 288-114 and the girls 345-54 in the swimming version of the Crosstown Showdown.
Despite the final team scores, Bryan swimmers made several races interesting, especially on the boys side.
"When you come in and you've got a small group and you see we have 40, visually alone it's got to be hard," Consol coach Ryan Goodwyn said. "So for [Bryan] to step up and not be intimidated and say, 'OK, team pointswise we are not going to win, but we're not going to back down,' I'm proud of Bryan. If you look at their quality, they are swimming really fast. They won a few events, and that's good."
With the district meet approaching, Goodwyn used the meet to honor his seniors, allow the Tigers and Lady Tigers a chance to compete in events they normally don't get to swim in to have some fun.
One example was junior Hayden Duplechain, who won the 100-yard butterfly (56.84 seconds) and 100 backstroke (59.86).
"Those are his two bad strokes," Goodwyn said. "Right now I have to figure out where to use him. He's a great breaststroker, great in the IM, great sprinter and now a great butterflyer. That time he swam there would have won our regional or be very close."
Duplechain had to fend off a good challenge from Bryan's Cody Smith in the 100 backstroke. Smith finished second in 59.97.
Other individual winners for the Tigers included senior Taylor Grieger in the 200 freestyle (1:55.56), Christopher Munster in the 500 freestyle (5:06.84) and Ryan Olivieri in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.47).
The Bryan boys had three individual victories with Cullen Tolmsoff sweeping the 50 freestyle (23.06) and 100 freestyle (51.59) and senior David Godinez winning the 200 individual medley (2:09.53).
"David wants to leave on a good note, and one of his goals is to better his time in the 100 fly," said Bryan coach Mike Ortiz, who had five swimmers out sick. "He's within a second right now.
"Cullen being able to get off the mental block, as a lot of athletes have to do, and get over the hump ... he's finally got it, and now that he's done that he's doing very well."
The Consol girls swept all 11 events, spreading the wealth evenly over the eight individual races with seven different winners.
Stacie O'Shea touched first in the 100 butterfly (1:04.86) and 100 backstroke (1:04.44).
The Lady Tigers' other winners were Erin VandeVanter in the 200 freestyle (2:04.50); Kelli Klein in the 200 IM (2:27.82); Katie Hirsch in the 50 freestyle (26.04); Robyn Miller in the 100 freestyle (55.55); Emma Griffith in the 500 freestyle (5:41.81); and Teresa deFigueiredo in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.63).
Klein edged Kim McDonald, who swam her lifetime time of 2:32.97. McDonald was one of four senior Consol swimmers honored along with Kristen Ackerman, Alexandra Popeschu and Greiger. Ackerman finished second in the 500 freestyle and a third in the 200 freestyle. Popeschu took fourth in the 100 breaststroke.
One of Bryan's top girls was senior Briana Criaco, who finished second in the 100 freestyle (1:06.48) and was honored on senior night along with Bryan's Godinez and Dorian Galindo, who placed third in the 200 freestyle and a fifth in the 100 butterfly.
Consol's boys and girls swept all six relays.
"On our medley relay, the girls were the same four girls, but they all swam different strokes, just to mix things up to have some fun before we put our game face on and get ready for district," Goodwyn said.
