AUSTIN -- A&M Consolidated's Sean O'Shea will swim for an individual state title in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Class 5A Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday.
O'Shea swam a school-record 57.06 seconds Friday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swimming Center, taking the top qualifying spot despite not being able to see for the entire race because his goggles filled up with water. He swam .81 seconds faster than the second qualifier. O'Shea will also swim in 200 individual medley consolation finals after posting a 1:57.70.
Consol opened its events with the 200 medley relay. The team of Brett Cast, Sean O'Shea, Benjamin Jackson and Stephen O'Shea swam a 1:37.46 to take the seventh spot in the finals.
The team of Jack Burley, Stephen O'Shea, Jackson and Sean O'Shea will contest the consolation finals in the 200 freestyle relay after swimming a 1:28.06. A mere 3.13 seconds separated the entire field of teams in that event.
"The good thing is that with both [relay] teams, we know we can be faster," Consol head coach Ryan Goodwyn said. "The 200 freestyle relay team should be in position to win the consolation finals. Everyone's splits have been faster and can be faster tomorrow."
Saturday's finals begin at 3:30 p.m.
