Washington County scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to post a 17-2 Junior League sectional softball win over Bryan United Saturday.

The run-ruled game opened the Section I Tournament at Weedon Ballpark.

Washington County jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning with three hits and a trio of errors by Bryan United. Left fielder Reagan Kwiatkowski's two-run triple to right was the big hit of the inning. The two-out hit came two pitches after Courtney Anderson's RBI single up the middle. Kwiatkowski stayed at third base in the opening inning but scored three times in the game. She was 3 of 4.

Meghan Carpio led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single for Bryan United, which loaded the bases with two outs. Colleen Bentke recorded a strikeout to end the threat.

Ashleigh Perez, Ashley Contreras and Alyssa Vega had the other hits for Bryan United. Perez had a one-out single in the third inning. She stole a base and scored on a wild pitch.

Ally Bessette, who was hit by a pitch that bounced off her helmet and out of play, advanced on a stolen base. She scored on a throwing error.

Vega was the only base runner for United after the third, getting her hit with two outs. She got as far as third, but Washington County relief pitcher Kate Wellmann recorded her second strikeout in her only inning in the circle to end the threat.

Wellman followed starter Bentke, who worked the first three innings and allowed three hits, and relief pitcher Anderson, who worked a perfect fourth inning.

The victory pushed Washington County into a winner's bracket game against Smithville Sunday at 7 p.m. Bryan United will take on the loser of that contest Monday at 7 p.m. in an elimination game.

Washington County added a run in the second inning when Rachel Warner singled home Alli Spivey, who scored three times in the game. Brianna Oevermann, Morgan Prigge and Katie Kieke got hits in a three-run third inning. Spivey drove in two more with a single in the fourth.

The first four batters scored for Washington County in the fifth inning. Bentke and Dahlquist drove in runs.
