You see them everywhere. They're glossy, they're bright, they're chock full of information.

Mothers may be sitting in the stands, with small white cardboard boxes full of them. Others have them in stacks that look like movie scripts.

However they look, be assured that almost every 16-Under team competing at the ASA/USA Girls' Class A 16-Under Fast Pitch National Tournament in Bryan-College Station this week will have a booklet highlighting each and every one of their players.

Think of them as miniature resumes, highlighting everything the coaches from 122 different colleges at the tournament may want to see. Personal and academic information is included, complete with GPA, honor rolls and honor societies and any other sports the player may participate in.

There is a section for high school softball accomplishments, like All-Brazos Valley mentions, playoff results and individual stats. The same goes for travel team information, as it includes info on which tournaments the girls participate in and how they perform.

Nebraska assistant coach Diane Miller said the books also help with easily identifying players if college coaches are unfamiliar with a particular team.

"If a player catches your eye, you can flip through to see what class year they are," Miller said. "If they're 2012 and you already have a player at that position for that class, you look somewhere else. Maybe you flip through and see if they have players for 2011 at positions you need, so you can play closer attention to them. They are very helpful in that way."

Parents from the Huntsville Sparks said the booklets are a constantly evolving document that they maintain and print year-round. As more academic information becomes available, parents send it in and update it. As they finish more tournaments, that's added under the "Experience" section.

The parents of the Sparks all band together to create the book. Some will send in the information while others will collect it and put it on the pages. Another may get pictures of the players to add and still another will do the printing. This way, no one parent has the burden of creating the whole document.

These booklets become like media guides or recruiting materials. Parents will send these out to colleges to help their students get noticed or to start the dialogue with a particular school.

That's why each one includes a section for references, with phone numbers for high school coaches, travel team organizers and hitting coaches. Of course, there's also e-mail addresses and phone numbers for the individual players and parents.

That may be the most important part of the book for coaches like Miller.

"We are on the phone all the time," Miller said. "Being able to talk to their travel coach is very important. You get a sense of how the girl plays as well as some of her intangibles. Has she been with the team long? Has she sort of 'team-hopped'? That all goes into how we look at a player."
