Michelle Floyd pitched a two-hit shutout to lead the Orange County Batbusters to an 8-0 victory over the Atlanta Vipers-Berry in the championship game of the ASA/USA Girls Class A 16-Under Fast Pitch National Tournament on Sunday.

The California team which assured itself of a spot in the final Saturday, concluded the seven-day tournament without a loss.

Floyd, who suffered an arm injury two weeks before the start of the tournament, showed no signs that it was still a problem.

"I couldn't pitch in the Best of the West tournament we had before this," Floyd said. "I just came to nationals and the team was really supportive and we just did fantastic. It was a lot of work, a lot of innings, but it was amazing."

Teams from California and Georgia claimed five of the top six spots in the tournament, and the Vipers would have needed three wins Sunday to capture the title. They won their opening game Sunday morning convincingly, 9-1, sending the California Cruisers to a third-place finish.

"I've been dreaming about this for about three years," Floyd said. "When I went [to] travel ball, I wanted to get this championship so badly and with this team I knew it was the best chance I would ever have."

With a laugh, she added: "And we got it."

Batbusters shortstop Delaney Spaulding finished 3 for 4 with a double and drove in a run. She reached base in all four at-bats while leading a seven-hit attack for Orange County.

"We all wanted that national championship," Spaulding said. "We all came through and today, fortunately, that was me. There was more pressure on them, so we could play more relaxed, so that was definitely an advantage for us."

Hannah Sommer drove in the first two runs. Her deep sacrifice fly scored first baseman Sarah Moore, who began the second inning with a walk. Moore started a four-run fourth with a leadoff double before scoring on a ground ball by Sommer.

The Batbusters added hits by Emilie Valadez, who beat out an infield grounder, and from Mandy Perez and Spaulding, who each drove in runs in the fourth. Allexis Bennett scored on an outfield error, one of two for the Vipers in the frame.

The Batbusters added three runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Right fielder Valadez began the burst with a single, Spaulding and catcher Madeline Jelenicki drove in runs with singles, and Spaulding scored the final run by beating a throw home after a ground ball by Darian Tautalafua.

"It was a wonderful week," said Vipers head coach and manager Phil Berry. "We lost a heartbreaker yesterday morning, battled through yesterday and won four games to come back and then won the first one this morning. We just ran out of gas a little bit against a great Batbusters team."

The Vipers had just two baserunners, neither of whom advanced beyond first against Floyd, who recorded seven strikeouts. Catcher Kelsey Mericka singled to open the second inning, but Floyd coaxed a pair of pop outs and concluded the inning by fanning Shannyn Palazzo.

Christine Campbell, who pitched the final two innings for the Vipers, had the other hit, a drive to left with one out in the fifth. That was the only inning in which Floyd did not have a strikeout, but she got two of the six infield popups that her pitches produced in the game.

Berry said the finalists have come to know each other well.

"The organizations have competed against each other over the years," Berry said. "It's a West Coast-East Coast kind of thing. We admire they way they do things to build their teams and we think we've earned a little bit of their respect as well."
