After Batbusters catcher Madeline Jelenicki made a spectacular diving catch of a foul ball, she let her teammates know how fired up she was as she dusted herself off and headed back to the dugout.

They got the message. Hannah Sommer's single started a five-run bottom of the fifth inning, enough to give the Orange County team a spot in the ASA 16U championship game with a 5-0 victory Saturday over its California neighbors, the Cruisers.

Sommer, who had a long at-bat in her first plate appearance, wasted no time getting on board in the fifth to spark the win.

"I was expecting [a pitch] outside and just felt good and went with it," said Sommer, who has played in national title games in Georgia and California. "The first at-bat she threw me straight outside and I knew she was going back there the first time. I was going to get her back."

Sommer's single to right started a string of five consecutive hits by Batbusters, who benefited from three Cruiser errors. The first really opened the door for a big inning.

Pitcher Maddi Osias had to wait for a runner to cover first and her throw went into right field, allowing courtesy runner Emilie Valadez and Heidi Velk to score.

"That's a team that we have played a couple of times this year and defensively they are very good," Batbusters manager Jess Martinson said. "We just concentrated on executing, getting the ball on the ground and moving our runners up and giving us a chance to score.

Mandie Perez had an RBI single up the middle and Delaney Spaulding followed with a single to right. Jelenicki was safe on an error and scored the final run on a double steal.

The surge was surprising because Osias to that point had allowed only one hit, a Velk single in the third inning that ticked off the glove of third baseman Tiffany Mikkelson. It was an impossible play to make, but it was the only ball hit Mikkelson's way that she didn't scoop up while playing a stellar game.

"It has been really tough with the weather and I'm really proud of the kids," Martinson, said. "We've used pretty much every kid on this roster to get to this point."

The Cruisers still have a chance for a rematch. They play Atlanta Vipers-Berry -- which picked up a 5-1 victory over Georgia Southern Force in an elimination game Saturday -- at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at Veterans Park, with the winner facing the Batbusters.

"We played [the Cruisers] in Colorado and we see them all the time," Martinson said. "They're from our same hometown. They are friends of ours, and a lot of those kids we know. We have played both the Vipers and the Cruisers, so we have some information. Those are both very good teams.

"We'll stay in the moment. We teach these kids to do that, not look too far ahead and don't look back."

Batbusters starting pitcher Michelle Floyd, who tossed the first six innings Saturday, held the Cruisers to two hits. Ashley Ercolano had a two-out single in the second and Mikkelson singled with one out in the fourth.
