The Bryan United Little League softball community had a wild roller-coaster ride at the Section 1 Texas East Tournament at Weedon Ballpark on Monday night.

The United Major League softball team rolled to a 12-2 victory over Elgin in the losers' bracket finale, earning a spot in Tuesday's 7 p.m. title game against Washington County.

United, which is in its first season after merging what was formerly Bryan West and Bryan North, ended the game via the run rule on Stephanie Easter's two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning. There were plenty of smiles and high fives to go around and the players even sang Happy Birthday to head coach Tommy Galvan Sr. after banging out 13 hits.

The mood was much different at the adjoining field about 10 minutes later, as the United Junior League team left the bases loaded in a 6-5 loss to Smithville. United also left the bases loaded in the fifth inning.

Smithville earns a rematch with Washington County in Tuesday's title game at 6 p.m. If Smithville wins, a second game would follow to determine who advances to the state tournament in Seguin.

The United Major League softball team would have to win two games to reach Seguin. If United can win Tuesday, the second title game will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Tyler's Rose Capital East Little League American 10- and 11-year-old baseball team defeated Elgin 11-8 in Monday's other losers' bracket finale to advance to play Bryan Harvey at 6 p.m. Tuesday. That's an hour earlier than what had been originally scheduled. Rose Capital East would have to beat Harvey twice to reach the state tournament, which is in Tyler.

Powerful Harvey has outscored its three opponents 42-4, which includes a 17-0 victory over Rose Capital in the opener for both teams.

Major Softball

Elgin scored a run in the first inning after retiring United in order, but it was all United thereafter.

United answered with nine runs in the second. United started the inning with consecutive hits from Alissa Reyes, Desiray Sauseda, Melanie Savala, Audriana Andrade and Rebecca Delgado. Reyes and Savala later added RBI singles as United sent 14 batters to the plate. United stole three bases and benefited from three wild pitches.

Easter pitched the first two innings to earn the victory with Brandie Medina throwing the last two, allowing only two hits.

United right fielder Reyes made a running catch to end the second and prevent a run. Second baseman Chandon Morris topped that by making a running catch in short right field to end the fourth with an Elgin runner on second.

United added a run in the third with Delgado, Lauren Galvan and Alexis Enriquez getting hits. Andrade and Medina came up with back-to-back two-out singles in the fourth to set the stage for Easter's game-ending hit.

Junior Softball

United started fast, with Adrianna Salinas' double capping a three-run first inning. Ashleigh Perez, Ally Bessette and Ashley Contreras each had singles to get things rolling.

Spunky Smithville fought back to take a 4-3 lead. Smithville, which scored a run in the second, had a big rally after two outs in the third. A pair of Smithville batters reach on errors. Leslie Wilhelm singled in a run, then Smithville managed to score two runs on Addison Wilmon's spinning dribbler to the right side that United couldn't handle. United bobbled the ball, which allowed Wilmon to just beat the fielder to the bag. Smithville's Valerie Harmon, who was at second, never stopped running on the play and easily scored.

United answered with a two-run fourth for a 5-4 lead. Yuli Rodriguez walked and Desiree Blanco reached on an error. Gabby Hernandez singled, but Smithville center fielder Wilmon and shortstop Cadie Jones had solid throws to retire Rodriguez at the plate on the play. Smithville pitcher Morgan Harris struck out the next hitter, but Perez picked up United with a single to center for two runs and a 5-4 United lead, but it was short-lived.

Smithville's Jones and Macy Wilhelm had back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Danielle Smith flew out to deep center field, allowing the runners to advance. United opted to intentionally walk Harris, who had doubled in a run in the first and reached on an error in the third, but the first pitch was over the catcher's head, allowing Jones to score the tying run.

United then pitched to Harris, who eventually did walk. Harmon was hit with a pitch to load the bases. Leslie Wilhelm fouled off an 0-2 pitch, then singled to left to give Smithville a 6-5 lead.

United's relief pitcher Meghan Carpio and her defense did a good job keeping it a one-run game. Smithville had runners at third and second with no outs after a walk, error and stolen base in the fifth, but Carpio got the dangerous Jones to ground out. United shortstop Perez fielded Macy Wihelm's grounder and made a perfect throw to catcher Ally Bessette who made the catch at ankle level with pinch-runner Courtney Haney sliding into the tag. Smithville's Danielle Smith popped up to the catcher.

Harris retired United in order in the sixth, but the fifth and seventh were eventful. Harris induced a grounder to first to leave the bases loaded in the fifth. In the seventh, with the United fans making as much noise as possible, Contreras singled with one out. With two outs, Rodriguez battled back from a 1-2 count to walk and then Anissa Hernandez walked on four pitches, but Harris struck out the next batter to end the game.

United third baseman Alyssa Vega and center fielder Anissa Hernandez each had several plays. Perez, Bessette and Contreras each had two hits for United.
