Iola softball team loses series to Shiner

BRENHAM -- The Lady Bulldogs showed up early Saturday morning to work on their hitting after striking out 13 times the night before against Shiner's Heather Haas.

The extra work paid off, and Iola made much better contact against Haas in Game 2. But Shiner hit the ball as well and took advantage of four Iola errors for 10-1 victory to wrap up the Class A Region IV quarterfinal series at Alumni Field.

Shiner advances to play Falls City in the regional semifinals.

"We struggled defensively and were still a little in awe of Shiner," Iola head coach Roger Masters said. "We've got a lot of youth and a lot of inexperience, and it shows in the errors we make. [Shiner's] going to go a long way. Coach Siegel is a great coach, and he's got them well-tuned right now."

Iola sophomore Amber Brown made two solid plays in left field, and pitcher Kelseigh Braaton allowed just one earned run, striking out three and walking four.

"We picked up a lot of experience from this series," Masters said. "I'm excited for next year because it'll be my second full season as head coach and the first time I've had a leading senior class. Between the pitcher Braaton, her best friend and catcher Hannah Pointer and the leader of the outfield, my centerfielder Erin Campian, we're going to have some great leadership out there."
