Eagle Staff Report
One bad inning spoiled A&M Consolidated's plan for a rematch against Dripping Springs, but it didn't completely ruin the weekend for the Lady Tigers softball team.
Consol bounced back from a Friday loss to Fort Bend Travis with a pair of victories Saturday to take third place in the College Station ISD Tournament. Consol completed pool play Saturday morning by beating Little Cypress-Mauriceville 9-6, then thumped Henderson 8-0 in the third-place game at Lady Tiger Field.
Consol went 5-1 in the tournament, raising its season record to 15-2.
Travis shocked the 11th-ranked Lady Tigers by scoring seven runs in the sixth inning to beat Consol 8-5 in Friday's late game. Travis won its final pool game Saturday to earn a spot in the championship game, which Dripping Springs won 4-2.
Last weekend, Consol won the tournament title at Dripping Springs by beating the host team in the championship.
Consol's resolve was tested Saturday morning, when sloppy fielding allowed Little Cypress-Mauriceville to take a 4-1 lead after the first inning. The Lady Tigers fought back with six runs in the third and finished the game with 12 hits, getting two apiece from Jordan Bettiol, Sarah Allison, Alyssa Gregg and Kayley Smith.
"This team has bounced back over and over," Consol coach Billy Hicks said. "The kids really have done a great job of sticking together, fighting and playing hard. I'm just thrilled with the effort these kids have given. I don't feel like we're out of any game. We hit the ball, and that helps a lot."
In the third-place game, Sydney Parks went 3 for 3 with two doubles and Allison belted a home run.
Sarah Halliwell got the pitching decision in both Friday games and the win over Little Cypress-Mauriceville, moving her record to 13-2. Freshman Macy Hicks (2-0) pitched all five innings against Henderson, providing a timely break for Halliwell as the Lady Tigers prepare to play Belton in a make-up game Monday before facing Bryan on Tuesday.
The top of the Consol lineup had a big weekend, with Allison going 10 for 17 and driving in eight runs to lead the way. Parks was 8 for 13 with five doubles, while Bettiol went 7 for 14 with three doubles and a triple.
