As team worries go, the tendency to relax once you've taken a comfortable lead doesn't rate with leaving runners on base.

That's especially true when the team that eases up still wins easily, which was the case as the ninth-ranked A&M Consolidated softball team beat Belton 7-0 in District 12-5A action at Lady Tiger Field on Wednesday night.

Consol bounced back from a Tuesday loss to Bryan marked by the Lady Tigers' difficulty producing hits with runners in scoring position. Consol didn't knock the cover off the ball while going 4 for 10 in clutch situations against Belton, but the Lady Tigers used a combination of well-placed hits and Belton errors to score seven runs in the first two innings.

"It was a weird game," Consol coach Billy Hicks said. "We never really got on track hitting the ball hard until the last inning. We hit a lot of balls in the right places, in between people or right down the line or in the hole."

The Lady Tigers produced a couple of solid hits and one line-drive out in the last two innings, but Consol did not score in its last four at-bats.

"We've been prone to jump out big on somebody and then kind of ease along, take our foot off the gas," Hicks said.

Consol was coming off a stunning loss in which Bryan scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to win. The Lady Tigers showed no hangover early against Belton, scoring two runs just four batters into the bottom of the first.

Cleanup hitter Sarah Allison stroked a two-run single to center to cash in on Jordan Bettiol's leadoff walk and a single by Sydney Parks. Allison finished 3 for 4 with three runs batted in.

The Lady Tigers killed Belton softly in the second inning. Consol scored five runs on three infield hits and two Belton errors. Sarah Almand, who went 2 for 3, started the second with an infield single in the hole between third and shortstop.

Sarah Halliwell (14-3) pitched her second complete game in two nights. The junior right-hander registered six strikeouts and allowed only two hits, a 12-foot squib shot in the fourth and a clean single to left by Jenna Roach with two outs in the seventh.

Consol did not commit an error for the second consecutive game. The Lady Tigers got a sparkling play from third baseman Alyssa Gregg, who charged in to barehand a dribbler and get an out after Belton started the third inning with a walk.

Consol improved to 16-3 overall and 2-1 in district. The Lady Tigers will play a nondistrict game at Katy Seven Lakes on Friday, then take a few days off for spring break before playing Temple on March 18.

Struggling Belton, which lost to rival Temple on Tuesday for the first time in five years, dropped to 5-14 and 0-2.
