Comebacks have been common for the Bryan and A&M Consolidated softball squads this season, and both teams produced rallies during the first round of the Crosstown Showdown.
Hits with runners in scoring position proved rare, however. Brooke Parker delivered the biggest, drilling a two-run triple to complete a three-run rally in the seventh inning that lifted Bryan to a 4-3 victory over Consol in District 12-5A action Tuesday night at Lady Viking Field.
Parker's hot shot to the fence in left-center was the fourth consecutive hit for Bryan. Going into the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Vikings had managed three hits and were in danger of letting the game slip away like they had an early 1-0 lead.
"We didn't give up," said Parker, who batted ninth in the lineup. "We kept going until the end, which is what we do."
Emily Peirce started the winning rally with a hustling infield single that was nearly prevented by Consol second baseman Ashley Warzon, who already had contributed two crucial fielding plays. Two wild pitches pushed the runner to third before Kaitlyn Hathcox produced her second RBI hit of the night, slapping a single to right after fouling off three full-count pitches.
Bryan put the potential winning run on base when Jennifer Saxby's attempted sacrifice bunt turned into a hit as the Consol first baseman fell while fielding the ball.
The set the stage for Parker, who made a poor attempt for a bunt hit on the first pitch. On the next offering, Parker turned as if to bunt and then pulled back her bat for a slap swing. Her liner easily cleared the shortstop and scooted just beyond the reach of the center fielder, driving in both pinch-runners to end the game.
"We've been the cardiac kids recently, winning several games in the last inning," Bryan coach Enrique Luna said. "I'm super-proud of our crew for hanging in there."
Consol pitcher Sarah Halliwell retired 13 of 14 batters going into the seventh. Halliwell also came up with what was the game's biggest hit to that point with a two-run, two-out single in the fifth that gave the visitors a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Tigers added a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Jordan Berry, but Bryan pitcher Jennifer Kasper (7-1) escaped further harm by striking out the Consol cleanup hitter with the bases loaded. Consol left the bases full twice, stranding 10 runners total.
"Leaving 10 runners on base, that's a killer," Consol coach Billy Hicks said. "We did a lot of good things. Our girls played hard, and I'm proud of every one of them, but it's hard to overcome 10 runners left on base."
Bryan took the lead in the second when Kasper had a leadoff single and scored on a double by Hathcox. The Lady Vikings missed a chance for more because Warzon stretched from second base and picked up the ball to record the third out on a close play with the bases loaded.
The Lady Tigers got their first hits in the fifth inning on opposite-field singles by Jordan Bettiol and Sydney Parks. Kasper had pitched carefully to Sarah Allison in the first and third, walking Allison and then retiring Halliwell to wriggle out of trouble, but this time Halliwell drilled a two-run single.
"My hat goes off to Consol, because they did an outstanding job of hanging in there through seven innings," Luna said. "Fortunately the ball fell for us there at the end. It is a huge win for our kids and our program to get back where we want to be. We've just got to continue to build on it. Billy and his kids are going to be tough to beat in our district."
Consol (15-3, 1-1) should have its recuperative powers tested quickly. The Lady Tigers will host Belton in a make-up game at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The Lady Vikings (10-5, 2-0) will have a share of the league lead as they head to Carrollton for the Spring Break Classic that starts Thursday.
