Brenham softball team to face 18-4A opponent in playoffs

The Brenham Cubettes will face a familiar foe. They would like the result to be familiar, too.

Brenham meets District 18-4A rival Huntsville at Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. Thursday in a single game to decide their Class 4A Region III quarterfinal matchup. It's the Cubettes second straight single-game postseason match.

The second-ranked Cubettes won the 18-4A title while Huntsville finished third, six games back. Brenham won the first two meetings 9-3 and 17-4.

One other 18-4A team is still alive in the playoffs. Second-place Montgomery will open a best-of-3 series at home Thursday against Elgin.

Brenham (30-2) is coming off a 10-0 victory over the Houston Austin Mustangs in area. The Cubs had 15 hits and scored nine times in the second inning while Kaci Federwisch (18-2) pitched the first three innings off a no-hitter, striking out six. Carly Becker finished up by fanning four Austin batters in her two innings.

Huntsville was no-hit by Houston Waltrip's Anne Marie Taylor in its area opener, but the Lady Hornets rallied for 2-0 and 3-0 victories to advance, thanks to Shelby Smith's shutout pitching.

Iola's Lady Bulldogs, who are third in the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll, will face second-ranked Shiner in the premiere Class A series in the state beginning at 7 p.m. Friday in Iola. Game 2 is set for 2 p.m. Saturday with Game 3 to follow 30 minutes later if necessary.

Iola pitcher Kelseigh Braaton improved to 21-5 with a 4-1 area victory over Thrall. Catcher Hannah Pointer leads Iola in hitting with a .706 average.

Shiner, led by pitcher Heather Haas, was a state finalist last year. Shiner shut out Normangee 13-0 in area.
