Undefeated going into the playoffs, the St. Joseph boys soccer team needs two victories to reach the Final Four.
The Eagles will open the TAPPS Division III playoffs by hosting Flower Mound Coram Deo in a bi-district match at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Strong-legged defender Chad Peevey headlines a balanced lineup that produced a 13-0-2 record during the regular season. St. Joseph captured the District 3 championship by going 11-0-1 in league games, earning a No. 1 seed and the right to play its first-round match at home.
Coram Deo is the third seed from District 1.
Saturday's winner will advance to the regional round of the TAPPS tournament, playing either Carrollton Prince of Peace or Richardson Canyon Creek for a berth in the state semifinals.
Brazos Christian also qualified for the playoffs, finishing third in District 3. Brazos Christian will play its bi-district match on the road at 3 p.m. Saturday against Houston Cypress Christian, the winner of District 5.
Peevey was selected first-team All-Brazos Valley at punter and place-kicker in football. The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder provides St. Joseph's soccer squad with a dangerous weapon on free kicks, and his size and athleticism make him good on plays in the air.
"Chad's got a leg, to say the least," St. Joseph coach Steve Esperon said. "He's got no problem with pretty much any kick."
The Eagles also have a couple of dangerous forwards and some solid midfielders.
"This year it's been all about teamwork, passing the ball and playing as a team," Esperon said. "We've been able to do that in every game. Even if the score is close, we've had the heart to come out on top.
"We've got some very skilled players. If I had to classify our style of play, I'd call it a European style. We like to play it down the sidelines, take it out wide and then pass it back in toward the goal."
Forwards Garret Brightwell and Tate Brightwell spearhead the St. Joseph attack. Garret, a junior, leads the Eagles in scoring with 12 goals and nine assists.
"He's always there to finish, always the guy crashing the net and getting any rebounds," Esperon said.
Senior Jaemin Shin and junior Chris White lead St. Joseph in the midfield. Shin often joins the attack and has produced six goals and eight assists, while White helps control the middle and start the offense. Zach Blaszak is in his first season as the Eagles' goalkeeper.
