The Bryan Viking girls soccer team was on the verge of history when A&M Consolidated sophomore Blake Martin added to her own budding legacy.
Martin's miraculous goal with 99 seconds left in the second overtime allowed the Lady Tigers to escape Merrill Green Stadium with a 1-1 tie in District 12-5A soccer action Tuesday night.
Bryan has never defeated Consol, but for 97 minutes the fourth-place Lady Vikings were clearly the aggressor.
Bryan hit the crossbar on a free kick. The Lady Vikings also managed to get the ball behind the goalkeeper once only to have a Lady Tiger defender kick it away. And Consol keeper Christina Salas made an ESPN highlight save on Kacy Shea's rocket shot headed for the corner with only 2:24 left in regulation just to force overtime, earning a standing ovation from the Consol fans.
"It was like, how did that not go in?" Bryan head coach Amy Pettibone said.
Finally, just 2:34 into the first overtime, the Lady Vikings scored with senior captain Taylor Erickson fighting through the Consol defense and rifling the shot into the back of the net.
"I saw the goalie coming out as I was kinda stumbling past their last defender," Erickson said. "I just knew I had to get [the shot] to the corner, she's a good goalie."
It was a great play.
The Lady Vikings celebrated, then kept applying pressure with Dani Fellows and Sierra Garcia also getting shots on goal. But Consol coach Stoney Pryor reminded his team between overtime periods that it just needed to score next.
"We talked about playing with some pace, but not playing anxious," Pryor said.
The Lady Tigers played with a little desperation with only 4 minutes left.
Katy Turner had a long, hard shot on goal that earned a rare Consol corner kick. The Lady Tigers didn't come close to connecting, but they did earn a throw-in.
Grace Wright deftly tossed the ball to Martin, who had her left shoulder facing the goal from 25 yards. After taking a few steps, Martin twisted her body to the left while sliding down. She had enough power to knock the ball just inside the left side of the net, where the goalie had no chance for a save.
"I just got physical," Martin said. "I was able to touch it and get a little opening. I just shot it where I thought the goal would be."
The last time the two met, Martin headed in a corner kick by Katie Berlund in the first half en route to a 1-0 victory. This game had a much different feel for the young Lady Tigers, who play only four seniors.
"The whole game was nerve-racking because they were outplaying us," Martin said. "I definitely didn't want to be part of the team that lost to Bryan. I thought that a tie is better than a loss, so we definitely had to score."
Pettibone kept telling her players afterward they played a great game, but the Lady Vikings couldn't hide their disappointment.
"We've been waiting for this," said Erickson, one of the team's nine seniors. "Our first time we played Consol in our freshman year, it was the same exact thing, overtime. We wanted to make history tonight and I think that's what vitalized the team. We didn't pull through tonight, but I'm proud of my team."
The Lady Vikings never looked like a team coming off a 4-0 Friday loss at fifth-place Killeen Ellison.
"It was like, Friday, we couldn't do anything right, and tonight we couldn't do anything wrong," Pettibone said. "They should take a lot of pride away from this game. I think this group of girls proved they can play with anyone."
Bryan (12-7-6, 6-5-1) did knock Consol (15-5-2, 10-0-2) from a first-place tie with Belton (18-3-2, 11-0-1), but the Lady Tigers were still smiling as they headed to the bus.
"That's one of the unfortunate things about soccer," Pettibone said. "You can just pound a team and [make] one mistake ... and they capitalized on that one shot we gave them. It was a great shot. There's not much we could do."
