CORSICANA -- A&M Consolidated ran out of time after time had run out.

Summer Saylor and Candice Followwell scored the only two goals in a shootout, lifting Garland Sachse to a Class 5A area soccer championship victory over A&M Consolidated on Friday after a scoreless regulation and overtime.

On Sachse's first try in the shootout, Saylor edged left and right-footed a low shot just inside the left post. Followwell, who helped keep the Lady Mustangs in contention to score during regulation and overtime with her powerful throw-ins, converted with some nice footwork. She stepped left but put her shot into the right side of the goal.

Consol actually put two shots into the net in the shootout but failed to do it in the allotted time. In the high school shootout format, players start from 35 yards out and have seven seconds to get a shot off.

Elena Mora-Boellstorff's left-footed a shot in and Grace Wright crossed over to score on the right side, but neither beat the stopwatch. When Sachse's goalkeeper knocked aside Vicky Wilhelm's attempt, Sachse celebrated the win.

"I though our girls played very hard, but [the ball] just didn't end up in the back of the net [in time]," Consol coach Stoney Pryor said. "We just took a hair too long. The ideas were good. I thought it was a really good match."

Sachse had a great chance to score in the first 10-minute overtime period. Followwell dropped a pass to Kiana Clem, who had a hard-struck ball that led to a great save by Consol's Christina Salas. Salas, fully extended, got one hand on the ball to prevent a goal.

"She made a phenomenal save, just outstanding," Pryor said. "That was disheartening for them and certainly exciting for our group. I thought our defense played a very solid game and turned away some great opportunities for them and thought we did some good things creatively on the attack."

The Lady Tigers had their best chance to score with 32 minutes, 50 seconds left in regulation on a penalty kick. Grace Wright drove the ball low and to the left, but it was knocked away by Bridget Esquivel. Mayra Patlan tried to run onto the rebound, but her shot hit the outside of the goal.

Patlan had gotten loose to draw the foul.

"Mayra was able to get goalside of their defender and their defender, in hindsight wisely is pushing though Mayra and knocks her over," Pryor said. "It's easy to say if we had gotten the penalty kick, it wouldn't have gone to the shootout, but I don't believe it. If that was the last one second of the game, maybe it would have made the difference. I tell our girls all of the time that we may have a hero, but we never have a goat. Nobody costs us the game."

Consol finished with a 17-7-2 record.

Emily Smith nearly set herself up for a goal, playing the ball to herself and running past Sachse defender Natalie Calhoun. Esquivel was forced off her line and was out of position, but Calhoun caught up to take the ball away

Sachse appeared to have grabbed a 1-0 lead when Followwell stole the ball left of the Lady Tiger goal and had a 3-on-1 advantage and a straight shot at Consol goalkeeper Megan Eikenhorst. Instead, Followwell chose to pass the ball to Sarah Ford, who punched it in but was offside on the play.

After catching that break, the Lady Tigers had the best scoring efforts for the final 12 minutes of the first half. Mora-Boellstorff stole the ball and made a long run up the middle before dropping a pass to the right to Smith, whose shot was touched by Esquivel and deflected off the right post.

Wilhelm reached around a defender with her left foot to get a shot on goal. Another steal by Mora-Boellstorff led to a through pass to Charis Brantley, who could not quite catch up with the ball.

Sachse's Jessica Jacobs had two early shots on goal. The second was the hardest hit but was right into the chest of Eikenhorst, who grabbed the ball and tucked it away.

"I told the girls when the playoffs occur, my prayer is always that God lets our time together be as long as he would have it," Pryor said. "For whatever reason, this chapter with this group has drawn to a close. We had an outstanding group of seniors and we have done a tremendous job working as a team. They did a great job and will be very much missed."
