A&M Consolidated's Ryan Armatys and Tyler Lee's Ramiro Cardenas battle for possesion of the ball during the first half at Tigerland Stadium on Tuesday.

The playoffs magnify the precious nature of goals in the low-scoring sport of soccer, an enlargement made much greater against strong defensive teams such as Tyler Lee.

A&M Consolidated allowed an early goal in its bi-district playoff match against the Red Raiders on Tuesday night, and with one Consol was done, losing 1-0 on a breezy night at Tigerland Stadium.

The Tigers, who finished second in District 12-5A, finished the season at 14-10-1.

Lee (12-6-8) advanced to the area round of the Class 5A playoffs where the Red Raiders will face Lake Highlands, a 4-0 winner over Garland Sachse. The Red Raiders are the third seed from 11-5A.

The Red Raiders allowed only seven goals in 10 district matches, and they showed their defensive prowess against Consol despite allowing more shots on goal (4 to 2).

"We certainly created some good opportunities," Consol coach Chris Kovacs said. "Give them credit: They thwarted a lot of opportunities for us. They played well. I just shook my head a couple of times. You chalk it up to it wasn't our night as far as putting it in the back of the net."

Although the Tigers had an edge in ball possession early, Lee struck suddenly. Freshman forward Zeldon Quinsey burst past a Consol defender to chase down a long pass from Lee Cordova. Reaching the ball a step or two before goalie Henry Denoux, Quinsey lifted a shot over the keeper that dipped under the crossbar at the 31:09 mark.

"He's a freshman, but he's a threat," Lee coach Rich Brands said. "A&M played a little flat in the back, so we had a couple of chances. That's what we hoped to do, although we hoped to get some midfielders running up as well."

Cordova's terrific pass came from near midfield.

"Our back line might have gotten caught a little off-guard," Kovacs said. "That guy smacked it into the wind. Our guys were kind of playing up and thought it would get held up, but he really drove it into the wind.

"It was more demoralizing because when the kid hit the shot, it seemed like it wasn't going in. The wind held it up and it hit the back of the net."

The Tigers pushed forward with the wind at their backs, producing a couple of scoring chances in the first half. However, keeper Carson Fugate made a diving save to stop a shot by Kolby Graff, and Scott Meyer sent a header a couple of feet wide off a free kick by Ryan Armatys.

Consol had two good scoring chances from close range in the second half. Midway through the half, Eddie Hernandez sent a blast over the crossbar after pouncing on a deflection. With 14 minutes remaining, Aaron Salin lunged to deliver a rocket from about 13 yards, but substitute keeper Jesus Villegas answered with a diving save.

"They probably had a little bit more of the ball than we did," Brands said. "They knocked it around in midfield a lot, but they didn't really run at the goal maybe four or five times. My defenders had a real strong game, and I think both our goal keepers were pretty solid."

Consol's defense was led by Andres Tani, Will Wright and Salin.
