Bryan girls soccer team gets offense going in BV Cup

The Bryan girls soccer team said goodbye to its scoring slump Thursday night, and the Lady Vikings said it quickly.

Laura Briner scored twice as Bryan exploded for five goals in the first 14 minutes and cruised to a 5-0 victory over Houston Reagan in the first round of the Brazos Valley Cup.

Bryan (6-2-1) bounced back after going 0-2-1 in the I-10 Shootout. The host Lady Vikings earned a spot in the BV Cup quarterfinal round and will return to Merrill Green Stadium to play Richland at 3 p.m. Friday.

Held without a goal in three matches last weekend, the Lady Vikings stressed putting the ball into the net as they prepared for the match with Reagan (2-2).

"We worked on shooting yesterday, just to get them confident because last weekend was tough," Bryan coach Amy Pettibone said. "For an hour all we did was shoot. They must have taken 100 shots each."

The first 14 minutes Thursday must have felt like an hour to the Reagan keepers.

Briner started the scoring less than 4 minutes into the match when she broke into the box alone and punched a shot into the corner. A few minutes later, freshman midfielder Brittany Little drove a header just over the goalie after Dani Fellows sent a nice corner kick into the box.

Fellows earned another assist 3 minutes later, dribbling past a defender before sending a crossing pass that Briner converted to make it 3-0.

Kylie O'Connor delivered the most spectacular goal of the night when she connected on a long, curving kick from near the sideline at the top of the penalty area. Freshman Kacy Shea pushed the lead to 5-0 a couple of minutes later.

The overwhelming start came against a Reagan team that won 17 matches, won its district and reached the second round of the Class 4A playoffs last season.

"I was shocked how many we scored so quickly," Pettibone said. "We played a good team, but we came out and took them out of the game right away."

After the lead reached 5-0, the Lady Vikings did not press forward as much, content to possess the ball in the midfield. Pettibone gave her players special instructions for the second half, limiting them to two touches per individual possession and one-touch finishes on crossing passes. She removed the restrictions after Reagan's players became more physical, including a hard tackle from behind 5 minutes into the second half that sent Little to the bench to get an ice bag on her knee.

"I will never run a score up into double digits," Pettibone said. "What's the point? In the second half we had won the game, so I told them to work on the things that we're going to need the rest of the weekend, possession and playing quick."

Bryan's defense rarely was tested. Goalkeeper Ana Meyer faced only a couple of soft shots as the Lady Vikings shut down a team that returned two players who combined for 54 goals last season.

Both of the other matches at Merrill Green Stadium produced 4-0 scores, with defending tournament and 4A state champion Richardson Pearce beating The Woodlands College Park, and Richland defeating McAllen Rowe.
