Fabian Guerrero scored on a penalty kick with 15 seconds left in the first half to give Bryan a three-goal edge. It was a far bigger cushion than the Bryan Vikings needed as they went on to beat Killeen Shoemaker 5-0 on Saturday at Merrill Green Stadium, clinching District 12-5A's final playoff spot.
A&M Consolidated's 2-1 win over Harker Heights on Friday opened the door for Bryan to lock up 12-5A's last playoff berth without having to beat Harker Heights in Killeen on Monday.
"That's a big one for us because Harker Heights is playing so well right now," said Bryan head coach Tommie Allmon, whose team will meet the Knights at noon Monday. "It would have been really tough to beat them at their place, so this makes it a lot easier. In a sense, that's a warm-up game for us."
The Vikings (8-10-2, 7-5-1) had to wait a day while the Bryan ISD Invitational track meet was held at the stadium Friday night. When they took the field Saturday, they dominated play for most of the first half.
Bryan scored the opening goal at 27:05 when Kyle Wren was fouled. He reset the ball for a free kick and leisurely walked away. Guerrero's free kick was anything but casual. He stepped quickly to the ball and passed to Arnoldo Garcia, who raced past the Grey Wolves defense and on to the ball, putting a low shot into the right side of the Shoemaker goal.
Bryan took a 2-0 lead when Adrian Godinez volleyed a cross from the edge of the penalty area low into the right side of the net.
Jordan Freeman, who was working free to the left side of the goal, later drew the penalty kick that Guerrero cashed in for a 3-0 lead.
Vikings' goalkeeper Abel Gutierrez was rarely tested in the first half, but Shoemaker had one good chance when Chong Kwon pushed through a good pass to Darrion Nicholas, who had a one-one-one situation with Gutierrez. Nicholas shot, but the Bryan keeper made a quick-handed save, knocking the ball high over the net.
"Abel did it again like he did against Consol," Allmon said. "He made a great save to keep us up 1-0. If it's 1-1, [Shoemaker] gets excited and you never know what is going to happen."
Alejandro Cruz scored Bryan's fourth goal with 27:26 remaining in the second half, and Freeman made it 5-0 just 54 second later. Kyle Wren assisted on both, one-touching a pass left to Cruz, then crossing long to his right to allow Freeman to run on to the ball.
Gutierrez stopped consecutive shots 7 minutes into the second half, turning aside Johannes' 20-yard shots, then scrambling to stop Antonio Molina's attempt to score off a short rebound.
Shoemaker's Marl Llorica had his own stellar stop of Freeman's attempt to score in the second half, laying out to deflect Freeman's shot attempt that was slicing toward the right upper corner of the goal.
"We had a few kids hurt and because of spring break had kids out of town," Allmon said. "We only dressed 13 kids. Everybody was playing a whole lot. We tried to rotate kids and keep kids fresh."
Bryan won the JV match 6-0. Jose Falcon scored the first two goals on assists from Mauro Fernandez and Juan Gonzalez. Nehemias Falla set up Israel Mendez for a 3-0 lead, which grew to 4-0 on Rene Jaurez's goal from an Oscar Rodriguez. Bryan added a pair of late goals. Gonzalez scored off an assist from Isidro Carreño and Edgar Garcia off Falla's second assist.
