CORSICANA -- The Bryan Lady Vikings didn't need to worry. They weren't one-hit wonders.

Not in Friday's match, a 2-0 Class 5A area championship win over Richardson Berkner, and not this season. Bryan has now won two soccer playoff matches this week -- the only two in program history.

Brittany Little and Taylor Erickson scored first-half goals amid an early offensive attack, and Bryan's steady defense made them stand up after halftime.

Bryan (18-8-2) will play Garland Sachse in a regional quarterfinal match Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Waco ISD Stadium.

"I knew [Berkner's] defense was good and their keeper was good," Bryan coach Amy Pettibone said. "We talk to them all the time about coming out in the first five minutes like that."

Bryan attacked early and scored quickly. Dani Fellows' throw-in from the right sideline landed in traffic and was controlled by Little, who chipped a shot high and to the left toward the goal.

The extravagant angle left Berkner's goalkeeper with only one play -- to watch. The goal gave Bryan a 1-0 lead with 36:03 left in the first half.

"Dani threw in and we know she has a long throw, so I'm always ready for the flick or the pass," Little said. "I was just there. Nobody was marking me and I was wide open, so I just flicked it in. [The goalkeeper] didn't have a chance."

Little admits she wasn't sure that's where the shot was headed when it left her foot.

"I was hoping somebody would either tip it in or it would just go in, but either way, I was going to be happy," Little said. "I was pretty excited because it's good to get the momentum going."

Berkner (14-6-2) had a chance to even the score with 18 minutes left in the first half with a ball that skipped through to freshman Gabi Funes just inside the top of the penalty area. Before she could gain possession, however, she was undercut by Bryan goalkeeper Ana Meyer, who wrapped up the ball.

With 10 minutes left in the opening half, Meyer was caught out of her goal on a ball delivered to Courtney Baxter, who was injured on the play. The ball sat precariously in front of an empty net for a moment before it was cleared by Bryan's Jaime Thompson.

Momentum appeared to be swinging toward the Lady Rams with Lauren Woodson penetrated the Lady Vikings' defense but her misdirection shot was taken easily by Myer, who also brought in a longer attempt from Anne Lawrence.

"I thought we got a little bit too relaxed, like, 'Oh, that was too easy,' and spent some time defending," Pettibone said. "We knew that [Woodson] was their go-to player and we frustrated her, obviously. We kept our composure and played our game, but we're happy to be moving on."

When the momentum swung back to Bryan, it almost seemed a reward for its aggressive offensive attack. In a scramble outside the Berkner goal, the ball came free to the Lady Vikings' Erickson. She wasted no time planting it into the upper right corner of the net for a 2-0 lead with 8:39 left in the half.

"We talk all of the time about crashing the goal and being the first one to it," Pettibone said. "Honestly, that was the worst thing about our team at the beginning of the year, our ability to judge balls and crash goals. Now, it seems we score on them a lot more."

Nine minutes into the second half, Lawrence's corner kick gave the Lady Rams a shot at cutting Bryan's lead in half. Woodson headed it toward the left side of the net, but Bryan's Sally Clark, covering the left post, headed it away.

With 11 minutes left, Lawrence tried a 45-yard free kick that was struck hard but went right to Meyer. Lawrence led the late attack with two more shots and a pair of corner kicks, but nothing came close to connecting.

Bryan only real chance in the final minutes came from Sierra Garcia, who made a quick turn and fired a shot that was brought in easily.

It didn't matter.

A relaxed Lady Vikings' defense turned aside any offensive spark that Berkner could muster.

"It's all about getting hot at the right time," Pettibone said. "I think we're getting hot at the right time."
