Local golfers compete at Space City Classic: THE WOODLANDS -- College Station's Thomas McGrath III tied for fourth at the Legends Junior Tour Space City Classic at Woodforest Golf Club on July 19-20. McGrath shot a 75-76--151.

Andrew Scamardo posted a 77-85--162 to finish in a tie for 11th place.

Cralle wins hammer throw at championship: MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Chris Cralle of College Station won the men's hammer throw at the 2010 NACAC Athletic Association's Under-23 Track & Field Championships at the Ansin Sports Complex on July 11.

Cralle won with a throw of 232 feet.

Locals fare well at Texas State Junior Championships: AUSTIN -- Sam DeStefano posted a 73-80-69--222 to finish in a tie for sixth place at the Texas State Junior Championships at Horseshoe Bay Resort on July 27-29.

Thomas McGrath III, also competing in the 15-18 boys division, posted a 76-83-79--238 to finished 50th.

In the 14 & under boys division, Max Miller posted an 82-78--160 to tie for 10th place.

Eji Kwon shot an 84-84-75--243 to take 12th in the girls 15-18 division while Angela No tied for 18th at 81-81-87--249.

Local swimmers place at championship meet: SOUTHLAKE -- Sue Bloomfield won the 1,500-meter freestyle and the 200 breaststroke in the women's 55-59 age group at the 2010 Long Course Master's Zone Swimming Championship Meet at the Carrollton Independent School District Natatorium on July 23-25.

Bloomfield also took third in the 400 freestyle and swam on the winning women's 200 freestyle relay team.

Kevin Lungsford, competing in the men's 40-44 age group, placed second in the 400 freestyle, third in the 50 backstroke and 100 butterfly and took fifth in the 50 breaststroke and 100 freestyle.

Judy Wagner won the 100 breaststroke, placed second in the 400 freestyle and 50 backstroke, was third in the 200 backstroke and 100 freestyle and took fourth in the 50 breaststroke, 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle.

Golfers compete at amateur championship: MAGNOLIA -- Bryan's David Buchheit shot a 75-73-72--220 to finish in a tie for eighth at the TGA South Texas Amateur Championships at High Meadow Ranch Golf Club.

College Station's Matthew Young finished in a tie for 32nd after posting a 77-80-74--231.

Brazos Splash swimmers compete: THE WOODLANDS -- Brazos Splash Masters swimmer Leslie Schueckler won three events in the women's 55-59 age group at The Woodlands Masters Swim Meet held in Shenandoah on July 10.

Schueckler won the 100-meter freestyle in a time of 1 minute, 34 seconds and won the 200 breaststroke (4:16) and 50 butterfly (48.87). Schueckler also took third in the 50 freestyle (36.96) and 200 freestyle (3:24).

On July 23-25, Schueckler added third place finishes in the 50 butterfly (48.47), 200 individual medley (4:12), 50 backstroke (55.34) and 200 breaststroke (4:20) at the South Central Zone Swimming Championships held at Southlake, Texas. Schueckler took fourth in the 200 freestyle (3:26), 400 freestyle (7:09), 50 breaststroke (52.47) and 100 breaststroke (2:00), took seventh in the 100 freestyle (1:34) and eighth in the 50 freestyle (41.86).

Allison Schertz won four events in the women's 25-29 age group at the South Central Zone Championships. Schertz won the 100 freestyle (1:11), 200 freestyle (2:35), 800 freestyle (11:26.77) and 100 butterfly (1:41). She also placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:28) and took third in the 50 backstroke (40.94) and 50 freestyle (33.14).

GOLF

BV Amateur deadline extended: The deadline to enter the Brazos Valley Men's & Women's Amateur Championship has been extended to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The 36-hole event will include two rounds at Traditions Club in Bryan. It will have divisions for men's, women's, senior men's and senior women's. The format is stroke play (gross).

Amateur golfers living in Brazos, Robertson, Madison, Grimes, Washington, Burleson and Leon Counties are eligible.

The entry fee is $150 and includes cart, green fee and range balls for both days and a $15 donation to Junior Golf. For more information, call 979-779-1007.

St. Joseph holding golf classic: St. Joseph Catholic School is holding its 23rd Annual Golf Classic on Sept. 27. Tee times are 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at Briarcrest Country Club.

Entry is $125 per golfer or $500 per team. Teams can register on site. Sponsorships are also being solicited.

Proceeds will go toward the Power School Program, a student information database.

Aggie Swim Club holding tryouts: The Aggie Swim Club is holding tryouts from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2. Swimmers can come at either 5:30 or 6:30 p.m. on any one day.

On Aug. 30-31, tryouts will be held at the Bryan Aquatic Center on Oak Ridge Drive. On Sept. 1-2, tryouts will be held at the College Station Middle School Natatorium on Rock Prairie Drive.

Aggie Swim Club is open to all ages and the only requirement is the ability to swim one length of the pool unassisted.
