Rudder opens season with big victory: The Rudder girls basketball team beat Class 4A's No. 19 Willis 75-50 on Tuesday to open the 2009-2010 season.
"To be as sharp as we were against a playoff team [like Willis] is encouraging," Rudder head coach John Shelton said. "All 10 kids played quite a bit. The difference was the defensive pressure we put on them for four quarters. It wore them down."
Taylor Tucker led Rudder (1-0) with 21 points while teammate Fatima Adams had 14.
Rudder will play at Montgomery at 6 p.m. Friday.

Carlisha Wyatt led the Lady Vikings with 11 points while teammate Elizabeth Marrero had nine and Gia Ayers had eight.

Blinn guard named preseason All American: Blinn guard Kahlil McDonald was named an NJCAA preseason first team All American on Tuesday. The 6-foot-4 sophomore averaged 22.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game last season.
FOOTBALL
Blinn moves up to third: The Blinn football team moved up a spot to third in the National Junior College Athletic Association and JCFootball.com Top 10 poll. Navarro is No. 1 and Fort Scott Community College is No. 2.
Blinn will play Navarro for the SWJCFC title at 3 p.m. Sunday in Corsicana. The game will be broadcast on KWHI (1280 AM).
Blinn, which beat Tyler last week in the conference semifinals, lost at Navarro in the regular season.
SWIMMING
Consol swimmers shine at Invitational: The A&M Consolidated girls swim team placed second at the Bob Stallings Invitational at Texas A&M's Student Rec Center Natatorium on Friday and Saturday. Consol's boys were sixth.
Westwood won girls division with 392.5 points. Consol, which was 4-0 in dual meets, had 281 points as 22 teams scored. Hammond-Oliver High was 14th with 40 points.
Westwood also won the boys division with 361 points. Consol was sixth with 184 points as 22 teams scored. The Tiger boys were 2-2 in dual meets. Bryan tied for 15th with 32 points. Bryan Collegiate High tied for 22nd with two points.
The included more than 600 swimmers.
Consol sophomore Robyn Miller competed in two relays and two individual events, helping set school records in each event. She won the 200 freestyle in 1:55.91 and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.64).
Hammond-Oliver sophomore Haley Clark broke the meet record in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.32. She also won the 100 butterfly (58.34).
Bryan senior Tyler Clark was second in the 200 freestyle (1:46.80).

Franklin (33-11) will play Centerville on Friday at Tyler Junior College.

Centerville sweeps Warren: The Centerville volleyball team beat No. 19 Warren 25-8, 25-11, 25-18 on Tuesday in the Class 2A Region III quarterfinals.
Centerville will face Franklin on Friday at Tyler Junior College.
LeAnne Jones led Centerville with 11 blocks and 12 kills while Kelsey Lagrone had eight digs. Teammates Sarah Mutschler and Taylor Sullivan each had 15 assists.

Caldwell wins in five, advances to semifinals: MAGNOLIA -- The Caldwell volleyball team beat Tarkington 16-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 19-17 in the Class 3A Region III quarterfinals.
Caldwell (29-12) will face Carthage at 6 p.m. Friday at Bryan's Viking Gym.
Melissa Cumby led Caldwell with 16 kills while Vantazia Jackson had 15 kills, and Sondra Flippin had 14. Teammate Ashlee Hollis added 42 digs while Allison Alford had 40 assists.

Anderson-Shiro rallies to beat Hardin: CANEY CREEK -- The Anderson-Shiro volleyball team rallied to beat Hardin 22-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-12, 18-16 to advance to the Class 2A Region III semifinals.
Anderson will face second-ranked White Oak at 5 p.m. Friday at the University of Texas-Tyler.
Macy Moriarty led Anderson with 25 assists and six digs while Jordan Hitchcock had 14 kills, three blocks and six digs. Teammate Bailee Imhoff had seven kills, nine digs and two aces, and Taylor Sicola had eight kills, four digs and three aces. Brianna Eakins also had four kills.

Milano falls to Cayuga: GROESBECK -- The Milano volleyball team faced third-ranked Cayuga in the Class A regional quarterfinals for the second straight year, but the Lady Eagles couldn't change the previous outcome as they lost 25-20, 26-24, 22-25, 25-18 on Tuesday.

Leon tripped up by White Oak: ATHENS -- The Leon volleyball team fell to second-ranked White Oak 25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 15-25, 15-7 in the Class 2A Region III quarterfinals Tuesday.
Leon finished at 39-4.

Brenham sweeps Magnolia: The Brenham volleyball team beat District 18-4A rival Magnolia 25-19, 25-15, 25-17 in the 4A Region III quarterfinals Tuesday.
