Smith Field, collection to be dedicated: The Giddings' Hilton Lee Smith Baseball Field along with his baseball memorabilla collection will be dedicated at 6 p.m. Friday at the Giddings Public Library & Cultural Center.

Smith was born in Giddings in 1907. He pitched for Prairie View A&M and signed to play semi-pro baseball for the Austin Senators in 1931.

Smith signed with the Kansas City Monarchs in 1936. He pitched and battled fourth for the team in the Negro American League.

Smith retired in the 1950s. He taught and coached and was an assistant scout for the Chicago Cubs. He died in 1983. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.

Consol standout Brantley in all-star game: A&M Consolidated graduate Stafford Brantley will play in a Houston Area Baseball Coaches All-Star Game on Wednesday at Reckling Park in Houston.

Brantley will participate in the third HABC all-star contest and the second game featuring Class 5A players. The game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Consolidated's leadoff hitter and center fielder, Brantley was a first-team selection for the third consecutive year after hitting .340 with 10 doubles, three triples and 21 runs batted in. Brantley, who has signed with Temple College, led the Tigers with 13 stolen bases.

Consol sets season tickets deadline: Season ticket holders for A&M Consolidated football games have until Aug. 1 to renew or change their seats.

Consol's athletics ticket office will mail information packets to season ticket holders on July 1. Ticket holders whose address has changed in the last year are asked to email their new address to jattaway@csisd.org.

Tickets that have not been renewed by Aug. 1 will be offered to other customers.

Season tickets for four home games are $20. The fee for reserved parking is $20.
