Bryan to hold women's chalk talk: Bryan head football coach Bob Bellard and his staff are holding a "Women's Chalk Talk Football Clinic" at 10:45 a.m. Saturday in the Bryan High School Field House.

VOLLEYBALL

Bryan goes 2-1 on second day of tournament: ROUND ROCK -- The Bryan Lady Vikings went 2-1 on Day 2 of the Westwood volleyball tournament. Bryan beat Boerne Champion 13-25, 25-22, 25-13 and Beaumont Ozen 25-21, 25-20 but fell to Clear Brook 22-25, 19-25.

Bryan head coach Caroline Simpson moved to within two victories of career win No. 400. Bryan plays San Antonio Churchill at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at McNeil.

Against Boerne, Bryan's Tiffany Regmund had 12 kills, while Kamie Ray had nine digs and Kaylee Piatt had 23 assists. Regmund had eight kills and 13 digs against Beaumont and Jordan Cumpton and Regmund each had five kills against Clear Brook. Ray added 11 digs.

Consol moves into championship bracket at tournament: KATY -- The A&M Consolidated Lady Tigers went 4-0 in pool play at the Katy ISD Volleyball Tournament to reach the championship bracket. Consol (5-0) will face Katy Cinco Ranch at 9 a.m. Saturday.

On Thursday, the Lady Tigers beat Richmond Foster 25-22, 25-15 followed by a 25-20, 27-25 victory over Pearland. Karla Gilbert and Erica Arthur each had eight kills in the first match with Arthur adding 10 kills against Pearland.

On Friday, Consol beat Alief Hastings 25-9, 25-11 and earned another victory over Pearland 25-20, 25-22. Gilbert had nine kills against Hastings, and Arthur had seven against Pearland.

Blinn No. 5 in preseason poll; Schmidt honored: Blinn will open the 2008 volleyball season ranked fifth in the nation with a preseason All-American at the setter position. Kayla Schmidt, a 5-foot-10 sophomore from Bellville, was recently selected third-team preseason All-American.

The Lady Bucs open the season on the road Friday and Saturday at the San Jacinto tournament. Their home opener is the Labor Day Classic Aug. 29-30.

The team went 35-7 in 2007 and finished fifth at the NJCAA National Tournament, tying its best ever finish. Blinn has qualified for the national tournament the last five years, winning 89.2 percent of its matches over that period,
